Sarkander House in Skoczów

The Museum of Saint John Sarkander is located at 2 Rynek in Skoczów, in a historic building next to the town hall. According to old tradition, John Sarkander — a priest and martyr from Skoczów, canonised in 1995 — was born here in 1576. A chapel was created in the cellar, regarded as the place of his birth, in 1890. The visit can be combined with the market square and a walk around Skoczów.

Chapel and birthplace

The Chapel of Saint John Sarkander occupies the cellar and functions as a place of worship rather than a typical museum room. Its connection with the saint’s birth comes from historical tradition, so it is best described as the traditionally accepted birthplace. The building stands beside the town hall on the city’s main square.

Parish museum

The museum presents the life and cult of John Sarkander, along with sacred-art objects from churches in the surrounding area. The collection includes a 17th-century confessional, a tabernacle, paintings, statues and books, as well as the 1936 relief “Saint Teresa above Skoczów” by Jan Wałach. The exhibition also recalls Pope John Paul II’s visit to Skoczów in 1995.

The museum is at 2 Rynek, 43-430 Skoczów. Current listed hours are Tuesday–Friday 9:30–16:00 and Saturday 9:30–12:00; individual visitors and groups should contact the museum in advance.
