Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Skoczów

Holy Trinity Church in Skoczów is a Neo-Gothic Lutheran church from 1863–1865, built on the Wilamowice hill above the town. Its slender tower with a pyramid spire can be seen from many parts of Skoczów, and the town's Lutheran parish, with more than 3,500 members, is one of the largest in Poland.

History: 13 years waiting for a permit

After Emperor Joseph II's Patent of Toleration of 1781, Protestants in Cieszyn Silesia could found congregations, but their prayer houses were not allowed towers or bells. In 1849 the merchant Paweł Kozieł, later the congregation's first curator, began efforts to build a church in Skoczów – permission came only 13 years later. A local farmer named Górniok donated the land, Jan Stonawski gave the timber, and support came from Baron Zobel of Grodziec and King William I of Prussia, among others. The design was by the Viennese architect Horky, and the construction was led by a master builder from Biała. The church was consecrated on 1 November 1865, and the parish was established in 1866.

What to see

The church is built of plastered masonry, with a short rectangular chancel flanked by a sacristy and a staircase. At the front, a square tower with chamfered corners on its upper storey is set into the nave, with a porch at its base. Outside, the walls are braced by buttresses that rise above the eaves. Cross vaults survive in the chancel and by the tower, and a barrel vault in the porch.

The interior is filled by two-tier galleries on pillars, with panelled balustrades – typical of large Protestant churches that had to hold big congregations. The focal point is the Neo-Gothic altar with the pulpit set above it. Three iron bells from J. Silzer's foundry in Wiener Neustadt were hung in the tower, and the organ was built by the Sapalski firm of Kraków.

Did you know?

The longest-serving pastor in Skoczów was Rev. Józef Gabryś of Drogomyśl, who led the parish from 1912 to 1945. The parish has three filial churches, in Dębowiec, Simoradz and Pierściec. It is known for its music, with several choirs and ensembles.

The church stands on Zofii Kossak-Szatkowskiej Street. Sunday services are held at 8:00 and 10:00 and streamed online; check the current schedule on the parish website. Outside services the interior may be closed, so ask at the parish office about visiting. Allow 20–30 minutes and combine the visit with a walk around Skoczów's market square.
