Church in Dobra Szlachecka

A complex of two churches

Dobra Szlachecka on the San preserves an unusual church complex. The main wooden building from 1879 was a Greek Catholic Church of Saint Nicholas and now serves as a Roman Catholic filial church dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Beside it, within the stone wall, stands an older gate church — a wooden bell tower with a chapel above the passage.

The former Church of Saint Nicholas

The 1879 church retains its three-part layout and wooden structure on a stone foundation. Its interior has figurative polychromy from 1899–1904 and a four-tier iconostasis made by Antoni and Michał Bogdański with Mikołaj Demkowicz. The domes and unusual details show how Western architecture influenced the traditional church form.

A unique gate church

The older building has a defensive character: a passage in the stone lower level leads to a chapel above. It dates from no later than the 17th century and is regarded as the only surviving gate church in Poland. This is the main reason to stop in Dobra Szlachecka. The bell tower can be viewed outside; interior access requires prior arrangement.

Practical information

Address: Dobra 10, Sanok municipality. The exterior can be viewed freely, but no fixed tourist hours have been confirmed for the interiors. Arrange entry with the parish or caretaker and do not rely only on service times. Dobra is about 16 km from Zagórze; the trip can continue to the former churches in Łodzina, Tyrawa Solna and Ulucz. Remain quiet and ask before taking photographs.
