Museums
Sanok, Subcarpathian
The Museum of Folk Architecture in Sanok, known locally as the Sanok skansen (open-air museum), is one of the largest open-air museums in Poland. Spread over 38 hectares of hillside above the San River, it brings together more than 180 historic wooden buildings – cottages, Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches, mills and a whole reconstructed Galician market town. It is the best place in the region to understand the vanished village world of the Carpathian borderlands, and it reopened shortly after a serious fire in August 2026.
Sanok lies in southeastern Poland, about 1 to 1.5 hours by car south of Rzeszów, whose airport (RZE) is the closest international gateway. From Kraków, allow roughly 3 to 3.5 hours, mostly on the A4 highway. Sanok also has rail and bus links with Rzeszów. The ticket office and main entrance are at Rybickiego 3, on the northern edge of town and about 1.5 km from Sanok Royal Castle.
On the night of August 15–16, 2026, fire destroyed the museum's 17th-century wooden Church of St. Nicholas from the village of Bączal Dolny, along with its historic furnishings. A barn also burned and a cottage was badly damaged. More than 140 firefighters kept the blaze from spreading to over a dozen nearby buildings, and prosecutors have opened an investigation.
The good news: the museum reopened on August 20, 2026. Only part of the eastern foothills sector next to the fire site remains closed. The Galician Market Square, the manor house from Święcany and the Carpathian icon exhibition are operating normally. The museum is weighing two options – relocating a similar historic church or rebuilding the lost one from existing 3D scans. This was the museum's second major fire; in 1994 a blaze destroyed 15 wooden buildings.
The museum was founded in 1958 by Aleksander Rybicki, its first director, and welcomed its first visitors in 1966. It was the first open-air ethnographic museum created in Poland after World War II. Its mission was urgent: after 1945 much of the population of these borderlands was displaced, and whole village communities disappeared. The buildings here represent four ethnographic groups – the Boykos and Lemkos (mountain peoples of the Carpathians) and the Dolinianie and Pogórzanie (valley and foothill communities) – each shown in its own sector.
Building interiors can be visited only with a guide. A self-guided walk around the grounds takes 2 to 3 hours; guided tours last up to 2.5 hours. The terrain is hilly with some dirt paths, so wear good shoes. Is it worth visiting? If you are curious about rural Central Europe, this is one of the most rewarding stops in southern Poland – and kids under 7 get in free.
