Castles
Lesko, Subcarpathian
On a wooded hill above a bend of the San river, by the road from Lesko to Sanok, stand the ruins of the Kmita family's medieval stronghold. Sobień Castle is sometimes called the historic Gateway to the Bieszczady Mountains. Since summer 2026 the ruins have been open again: the walls have been secured, an educational trail has been laid out, and behind the castle there is a terrace looking out over the San valley.
The beginnings of the stone castle are linked with King Casimir the Great and the second half of the 14th century. It guarded the route along the San valley. It appears in documents as Soban in 1372, and around 1389 King Władysław Jagiełło granted it to the Kmita family, who made it their seat. In 1417 the king stayed here with Elżbieta Granowska on his way to Sanok, where he married her.
The name of Piotr Kmita Sobieński (1477–1553), voivode of Kraków and Grand Marshal of the Crown, comes from Sobień. Hungarian troops of Matthias Corvinus captured and destroyed the castle in 1474, and the Hungarians wrecked it again in 1512. The Kmitas then moved to Lesko, and the abandoned stronghold slowly fell apart.
The castle was built of stone on an irregular four-sided plan. A residential wing measuring 12 × 31 m stood on the south side, with a square tower in one corner. What survives are sections of the curtain walls and buildings, traces of the outer bailey's ramparts and stone window frames on the lower floor.
In 2025–2026 the Lesko Forest District carried out archaeological and conservation work. Archaeologists uncovered the entrance gate and the outline of a guardhouse, and finds included fragments of medieval firearms, a stone cannonball, crossbow bolt heads, coins and a stove tile. Wooden stairs, platforms, a loop trail with information boards and a viewing terrace overlooking the San valley and the mountain meadows were added.
Leave your car in the paved car park at the foot of the hill, surrounded by a fence styled as a medieval palisade. A forest path and steps lead up the hill, so wear comfortable shoes. Allow about an hour for the ruins and a moment on the terrace. It makes a good stop on the way into the Bieszczady, and you can also visit the castle in Lesko, where the Kmitas moved.
