Castles
Sanok, Subcarpathian
Sanok Royal Castle (Sanok is pronounced roughly "SAH-nock") is a Renaissance residence on a bluff above the San River in southeastern Poland, and today it houses the Historical Museum in Sanok. Its biggest draw is the world's largest collection of works by Zdzisław Beksiński, the Polish painter of haunting dystopian dreamscapes, who was born in this town. Add one of Poland's finest collections of Carpathian icons, and you have a rewarding stop on the way into the Bieszczady Mountains.
Sanok sits in the Podkarpackie region, near the borders with Slovakia and Ukraine. The nearest airport is Rzeszów-Jasionka (RZE). From Rzeszów it is roughly a 1 to 1.5-hour drive south. From Kraków, plan on about 3 to 3.5 hours by car, mostly on the A4 highway to Rzeszów. Trains and buses also link Rzeszów with Sanok. The castle stands at Zamkowa 2, a few minutes' walk from the main square. Leave your car in one of the town-center lots and walk up.
A fortified settlement on this hill is mentioned as early as the 12th century. King Casimir the Great later walled the hilltop, and the castle stayed in royal hands for centuries. On May 2, 1417, King Władysław Jagiełło celebrated his wedding to Elżbieta Granowska here, and Queen Sophia of Halshany spent her final years at the castle until 1461.
The building you see today largely dates from a Renaissance rebuild in 1523–1548, ordered by Queen Bona Sforza, the Milan-born wife of King Sigismund the Old. She never actually visited Sanok; her marshal supervised the work. Under Austrian rule the castle served as a district office, and the Austrians added a south wing, which burned in 1915 during World War I fighting. The museum moved in in 1934. The south wing was rebuilt in 2010–2011, and the Beksiński Gallery opened there on May 19, 2012.
The Beksiński Gallery. Zdzisław Beksiński was born in Sanok in 1929 and died in Warsaw in 2005. The museum became his sole heir and holds several thousand of his works, including paintings, drawings, prints and photographs. Several hundred are on display, from early photography to the dark, surreal canvases of his "fantastic period," and the gallery includes a recreation of his Warsaw studio.
Other permanent exhibitions:
Allow at least an hour for the Beksiński Gallery alone and 2 to 3 hours for the whole museum. The building has an elevator and accessible restrooms. An audio guide costs 12 PLN. Groups can book a guide in English, French or German in advance (160 PLN; Polish-language guide 110 PLN). Beksiński's imagery can be intense, so it may not suit very young children.
Is it worth visiting? If you have any interest in 20th-century art or Eastern Christian icons, absolutely. Few places let you see both at this level in one building.
Timing matters: on Mondays the museum is open only until noon, so aim for Tuesday through Sunday. From mid-November the weekend closing time drops to 3 pm, so arrive in the morning in winter. Summer weekends bring many travelers heading to the Bieszczady, while weekdays outside the school holidays are quieter. For deeper background on the icons and on Beksiński's life, consider the audio guide or book an English-speaking guide ahead of time. Payment is in Polish złoty (PLN).
