Lesko, Subcarpathian
The Lesko Synagogue ("LESS-ko") is one of the finest surviving Jewish monuments in southeastern Poland and the most striking building in Lesko, the small town known as the gateway to the Bieszczady Mountains. Built of stone in the 17th century, with curving gables topped by stone vases and a round corner turret, it stands on a slope by the old town ramparts. Of the several synagogues Lesko once had, it is the only one that survived World War II.
Lesko lies in the far southeast of Poland, in the Podkarpackie region, about 15 km (9 miles) from Sanok and roughly 3.5 hours by car from Kraków. The nearest airport is Rzeszów-Jasionka. Before the war, Lesko, like many small towns in former Austrian Galicia, had a large Jewish community whose life revolved around this synagogue and the nearby cemetery.
The synagogue was built between 1626 and 1654 on the site of an earlier wooden one, although some sources date it later. During World War II the German occupiers wrecked the interior and used the building as a warehouse. It then stood abandoned for years, and its roof collapsed in 1957.
Restoration came in 1960–1963 and continued in the 1970s. Conservators rebuilt the gables and turret based on an 1838 etching by Kajetan Kielisiński, which shows the building's earlier appearance. The synagogue has been a listed heritage monument since 1959.
For more than 40 years the building has housed a gallery run by the local cultural center, the Bieszczady House of Culture. Each year from May to October it shows work by artists from the Bieszczady region. Outside that season the interior is usually closed, but you can see the exterior at any time.
In summer 2026 the town carried out conservation work on the façades and architectural details, worth more than 358,000 Polish zloty (PLN).
Allow 15 to 20 minutes for the outside and about half an hour if the exhibition is open. Combine the visit with a walk to the Jewish cemetery a few hundred meters away.
Is it worth visiting? Yes, if you are interested in Jewish heritage or architecture, or simply passing through Lesko on the way into the mountains.
