Basilica of the Annunciation in Leżajsk

The Basilica of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Leżajsk is the heart of the Bernardine monastery complex and one of the major Marian shrines in Podkarpackie. The present church was built in 1618–1628, in a style between the Renaissance and Baroque.

The image of Our Lady and the interior

The focus of the shrine is the image of Our Lady of Leżajsk, also known as Our Lady of Consolation. According to the shrine’s information, the image was created before 1590 by Erazm, an artist from Leżajsk. The basilica is worth visiting beyond its pilgrimage role: its rich decoration, altars, sculpture and furnishings were created for a Baroque church and reward a slower look.

The famous organ

The main draw for music lovers is the monumental Leżajsk organ. It was built in two main stages, in 1680–1682 and 1686–1693, funded by the Potocki family. Its carved decorative case forms part of the basilica’s interior, and the instrument remains important to concerts and music events.

Visiting and practical details

Entry to the basilica is free, but it remains an active place of worship, so services and prayer take priority. The Bernardines publish the current schedule of Masses and devotions; confirm free sightseeing hours, access to the monastery museum and guided tours before travelling.
