Basilica of the Holy Spirit in Przeworsk

The Basilica of the Holy Spirit in Przeworsk is a Gothic church connected with the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, the Canons Regular of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. The present building was raised between 1430 and 1473 and retains its medieval character. Its defining feature is the Shrine of the Holy Sepulchre, rooted in the order’s Jerusalem tradition.

Church and Holy Sepulchre

The interior combines Gothic structure with later furnishings. Highlights include the 1693 Baroque high altar, 18th-century choir stalls with quotations from Scripture, a pulpit from 1713 and a bronze font from around 1400. The Holy Sepulchre Chapel is the main devotional focus and explains why Przeworsk became an important centre of the order.

The town’s history

The parish was founded in 1393, and for centuries the Canons combined pastoral work with running a school and hospital. The church stands in historic Przeworsk and pairs well with the town hall, palace-and-park complex, defensive walls and the former Bernardine monastery.
