Bacówka nad Wierchomlą Mountain Hut

Bacówka nad Wierchomlą is a small PTTK mountain hut in the Sądecki Beskids, set in a broad clearing at 887 m above sea level on the trail between Runek and Pusta Wielka. From the clearing you can see the Radziejowa range and, on clear days, the Tatras. The unusual shape of the building gives away its history: the hut was fitted out in a converted granary moved here from the village of Złockie.

History of the hut

The hut was formally opened on 15 October 1978. The driving force behind it was Stanisław Nowak, an activist of the PTTK branch in Krynica, whose name it has borne since 1994. In 2011 the hut was thoroughly renovated and extended: it gained a new roof, a large viewing terrace on the south-west side, a new kitchen and drying room, a sewage treatment plant and solar collectors on the roof.

On site

• Fireplace room and viewing veranda – the buffet serves hot meals and the hut's own specialities.
• Accommodation – rooms for 1 to 6 people; next door a Finnish cabin with two rooms and a fireplace, and JurtoStan, a camp of several sleeping yurts.
• For overnight guests – a sauna, ski room, drying room and a tool corner for simple bike repairs.
• Nearby – the Lembarczek nature reserve protecting Carpathian beech forest and, about 1.5 km away, the Dwie Doliny Muszyna-Wierchomla ski station.

Trails and access

The shortest approach starts at the bus stop in Wierchomla Mała – about 1 h 30 min up and 45 minutes down. Longer options: from Żegiestów-Zdrój via Pusta Wielka (about 5 h), from the hut on Jaworzyna Krynicka via Runek (about 1 h 50 min) or from Szczawnik via Jaworzynka (about 3 h). Driving up the forest road, which starts near the Hotel Wierchomla, requires a permit from the Piwniczna Forest District.

Prices (2026 price list)

A double room costs PLN 175 from Monday to Friday and PLN 199 at weekends; a four-bed room PLN 340/365 per night. Sleeping yurts cost from PLN 365 to 480 a night, less for longer stays. PTTK members get 20% off accommodation in the hut (not combinable with promotions). Staying with a dog is possible only in the single, four- and six-bed rooms, for an extra fee; bed linen costs PLN 25 one-off.

• Luggage: the hut offers luggage transport from Wierchomla Mała or Szczawnik (PLN 95 one way).
