Church in Muszyna Złockie

Former Church of Saint Demetrius

In Złockie, now a district of Muszyna, stands a wooden church with two identities. Built in 1867–1872 as the Greek Catholic Church of Saint Demetrius, it became the Roman Catholic parish church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary after the local Lemko population was displaced in 1951. It is a stop on Małopolska’s Wooden Architecture Route.

Architecture and interior

The larch church was built on a cross-shaped plan, with a post-built tower. An octagonal tambour, dome and turret rise above the nave. The interior preserves a 1873 polychrome, a complete iconostasis from the second half of the 19th century, three Rococo side altars and a Baroque crucifix. Also look for the 18th-century painting Christ at the Column.

Złockie and nearby sights

A 19th-century Greek Catholic cemetery enclosed by a wall and old lime trees survive beside the church. Złockie lies in Muszyna’s spa landscape, known for mineral waters and mofettes. Combine the visit with the churches in Szczawnik and Jastrzębik or a trip towards Jaworzyna Krynicka.

Mass times should not be treated as sightseeing hours. No confirmed ticket price is available, so agree any visit with the parish. Keep quiet and dress respectfully.
