Castles
Muszyna, Lesser Poland
Muszyna Castle (MOO-shih-nah) is a partly rebuilt medieval stronghold on Baszta hill (527 m) above the Poprad River valley and the small spa town of Muszyna in southern Poland. After a reconstruction completed in 2023, the former ruin has become one of the most popular sights in the Beskid Sądecki mountains: a 14-meter tower with a glass-walled viewing deck, an exhibition and a café. It is a great short trip for families and history lovers.
Muszyna lies in Lesser Poland, a few kilometers from the Slovak border and close to the better-known spa of Krynica-Zdrój. From Kraków, the drive via Nowy Sącz takes roughly 2.5 to 3 hours; Kraków Airport is the nearest international airport. Muszyna also has a railway station on the line through the Poprad valley. The castle rises right above the town center. The walk up is short but steep, so wear sturdy shoes.
The castle's origins are disputed. Tradition links it to 1301, when the Muszyna estates were granted to the Bishop of Kraków; historians also date the stone castle to the late 14th century or to around 1500, after an older fortress was destroyed in a 1474 raid. It guarded the border with the Kingdom of Hungary and the trade route along the Poprad. For centuries it was the seat of the governors of the "State of Muszyna," a domain of the Kraków bishops with its own administration, troops and courts that lasted until the partitions of Poland in the late 18th century. The castle was abandoned in the second half of the 18th century and fell into ruin.
Between 2020 and 2023 the town rebuilt parts of the castle with EU funding. Today you will find:
