Things to do in the Bieszczady Mountains: a travel guide from Sanok to the high meadows
The Bieszczady are Poland's wild south-eastern corner, on the borders with Slovakia and Ukraine: grassy ridges called połoniny above the tree line, Tarnica (1,346 m) as the highest summit, Bieszczady National Park with beech forests on the UNESCO list, and Lake Solina held back by the tallest dam in Poland. This guide covers the national park villages — Ustrzyki Górne, Wołosate, Wetlina, Smerek and Bereżki — Solina and Zawój on the lake, Smolnik and Żubracze, the wooden-church villages of Komańcza and Turzańsk, and Sanok, the gateway town with its royal castle, the Beksiński Gallery and a large open-air museum.
Distances are longer than the map suggests and public transport is limited and seasonal, so most visitors come by car: Sanok to Solina takes about an hour, to Wetlina about 1.5 hours and to Ustrzyki Górne 1.5–2 hours. Below you will find our ten picks for a first visit, one- and two-day itineraries with real driving times, practical notes for winter 2026/27 (short days, icy ridges, lift and railway breaks) and the full list of attractions in the region's towns. Opening hours and prices are dated — always check the national park's trail bulletin before you set off.

The wooden churches in Smolnik and Turzańsk belong to the UNESCO site Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region in Poland and Ukraine, listed in 2013.

The usual gateway is Sanok: about 1–1.5 hours by car from Rzeszów and usually 3–3.5 hours from Kraków (A4 motorway to Rzeszów). Trains and buses connect Sanok with Rzeszów, and the nearest airport is Rzeszów-Jasionka.
From Sanok it is 45–50 km (about an hour, via Lesko) to Solina, about 1.5 hours to Wetlina and 1.5–2 hours to Ustrzyki Górne on the Big Bieszczady Loop road. Public transport in the mountains is limited and seasonal, so a car is by far the easiest option. National park car parks (including Ustrzyki Górne, Wyżniańska Pass, Brzegi Górne and Górna Wetlinka) cost 30 zł per car per day (as of October 2026). For one-way hikes such as the Połonina Caryńska traverse, return by minibus or taxi, or ask your host to arrange a lift.
When to go
The ridges are at their best from late spring to October; in September and October the grass turns russet and visibility is often at its clearest. Trails and the dam get crowded in July, August and on long weekends, so start early. The forest railway and the boats on Lake Solina run most often in high summer.
Winter 2026/27. The ridges are fully exposed: strong wind, fog, ice and avalanche risk are normal here. Bring microspikes and poles, start early (park trails are open from sunrise to sunset), register longer routes with the GOPR mountain rescue station in Ustrzyki Górne and follow the BdPN and GOPR bulletins. The mountain emergency numbers are 985 and 112, and the Ratunek app lets rescuers locate you. The national park ticket (11 zł standard, 5.50 zł reduced, as of October 2026) applies all year. The Solina gondola is closed from 16 November to 18 December 2026, the forest railway runs only on selected winter dates and the Sanok museums keep shorter hours, though the open-air museum charges a flat 18 zł from 1 December to 31 March. Dirt roads, for example to the Sine Wiry reserve, may be impassable in winter.

Can you hike the Bieszczady ridges and Tarnica in winter?

Check the BdPN and GOPR bulletins and register longer routes with GOPR in Ustrzyki Górne. Emergency numbers: 985 and 112.
Does the Bieszczady Forest Railway run in winter?
+
It is a seasonal attraction. In October 2026 trains run to Balnica from Tuesday to Sunday (Mondays are maintenance days), while in winter they run only on selected dates. Check the current timetable and book on the railway's website before you travel, as seats are limited.
Where can I see Beksiński's paintings?
+
At the Historical Museum in Sanok Royal Castle, which holds the largest collection of works by Zdzisław Beksiński. In winter 2026/27 it opens Mondays 8–12, Tuesday to Friday 9–16 and weekends 9–15; a standard ticket costs 30 zł and is sold only at the ticket desk.
Can I bring a dog on Bieszczady National Park trails?
+
Only on a few designated sections, for example from Nasiczne or Bereżki to Przysłup Caryński. Dogs are not allowed on the trails to Połonina Wetlińska or on the Połonina Caryńska ridge itself. The park's website lists the current rules.
Sanok to Solina is about an hour via Lesko. Walk the dam and, when it is running, take the gondola up Mount Jawor. Solina and Polańczyk have most of the lakeside accommodation.
The drive from Solina to Wołosate via Ustrzyki Górne usually takes 1.5–2 hours, so leave at first light. Follow the blue trail for about 2 hours to the pass below Tarnica and 15 minutes to the top; the round trip is about 3.5 hours of walking. For a shorter day, hike Połonina Caryńska from Ustrzyki Górne instead.
On the way back along the San valley (road 896 towards Lutowiska), stop at the wooden church in Smolnik. You can see the exterior at any time; outside Sundays in July and August the interior opens only by prior arrangement.
