Mountains & peaks
Wetlina, Subcarpathian
Połonina Wetlińska (roughly "po-WO-nee-na vet-LEEN-ska") is one of the signature ridges of the Bieszczady Mountains in Poland's far southeastern corner. This roughly 8 km massif is topped by open, grassy highland meadows called połoniny, with sweeping views across the Carpathians, and it is home to Chatka Puchatka, the highest mountain shelter in the range. A short, steep climb from Wyżna Pass gets you onto the ridge, making it one of the most rewarding hikes in the region.
The ridge rises above the village of Wetlina, inside Bieszczady National Park, close to the Slovak and Ukrainian borders. The nearest airport is Rzeszów-Jasionka (RZE), about 2.5 to 3 hours away by car. From Kraków, allow around 4.5 to 5 hours; from the town of Sanok, about 1.5 hours. Public transport in the Bieszczady is limited and largely seasonal, so a car makes life much easier.
The name comes from the nearby village and was coined by Austrian mapmakers when this region belonged to the Habsburg province of Galicia. Cattle grazed these meadows before World War II, and the area saw fighting in World War I.
A classic full traverse runs Brzegi Górne – Chatka Puchatka – Orłowicz Pass – Smerek – Wetlina: about 14 km and 5 hours of walking. An out-and-back from Wyżna Pass takes around two hours. Times are approximate and depend on your pace and the weather.
Named after the Polish version of Winnie-the-Pooh, Chatka Puchatka ("Pooh's Hut") sits at 1,228 m and is the highest shelter in the Bieszczady. After modernization it operates as a 24-hour emergency shelter run by the national park, with a post for park rangers. Since October 1, 2026, crews have been paving the trail near the shelter, so expect occasional delays. The park has also reported limited water supply after storms; portable toilets stand outside.
Who is it for? The Wyżna Pass route suits most reasonably fit walkers and older children used to hiking, but it is steep and rocky – strollers are out. Bring water and snacks, since the water supply at the shelter is unreliable, plus a windproof layer even in summer. For a one-way traverse, leave the car at one end and arrange a taxi or a lift back with your host in Wetlina.
The crest is fully exposed and winds can be fierce – in October 2026 the park warned of gusts up to 80–90 km/h (50–56 mph). In winter, bring microspikes and poles, start early, and check the mountain rescue service (GOPR) avalanche bulletin; the park recommends registering longer winter routes at the GOPR station in Ustrzyki Górne. This is also brown bear country, so stay on the trail and store food properly. Late September and October bring golden-brown meadows and fewer crowds than summer.
Is it worth visiting? For hikers, absolutely – it is one of the best viewpoints in the Polish Carpathians for relatively little effort.
