National parks
Bieszczady National Park protects the alpine meadows, mountain forests and valleys of south-eastern Poland. It is a destination for demanding hikes and wide panoramas. Mountain weather changes quickly, and some routes cross exposed ridges.
Tarnica (1,346 m) is the highest peak in the Polish Bieszczady. The popular nature-and-history trail from Wołosate is about 4.4 km uphill and reaches the summit via the pass below Tarnica. Another classic is Połonina Wetlińska with the rebuilt Chatka Puchatka II tourist shelter. You can climb it from Wyżna Pass; the longer trail from Brzegi Górne to Wetlina is about 12.2 km. Połonina Caryńska, Wielka Rawka and Bukowe Berdo are also worth considering.
The alpine meadows are the park's signature landscape, but trails also cross natural beech forests. You may find signs of brown bears, wolves, lynx and wildcats. The park's Carpathian beech forests form part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for ancient beech forests. Stay on marked trails and do not treat wild animals as photo props.
Trail entry is paid; buy a ticket at an information-and-cash point or online. Before setting out, check BdPN notices, route closures, weather and parking rules. Trails are open from dawn to dusk. Dogs are allowed only on sections designated by the park and must follow current leash and muzzle rules. Start early for Tarnica or the alpine meadows, and carry water, an offline map, rain protection and a charged phone; mobile coverage can be limited.
