Nowy Dwór Gdański, Pomeranian
The Żuławy Narrow-Gauge Railway (Żuławska Kolej Dojazdowa, roughly "zhoo-WAHV-skah KO-leh doh-yah-ZDO-vah") is a heritage railway in northern Poland that runs through the flat Vistula Delta from Nowy Dwór Gdański to Sztutowo and Mikoszewo. The tracks are only 750 mm wide, the trains are old diesel railcars with open carriages, and the ride crosses polders, canals and a swing bridge. If you are looking for things to do near Gdańsk with kids, it is a relaxed half-day outing.
The line is in the Żuławy region, about 45 km (roughly an hour by car) east of Gdańsk, close to Malbork, home of the famous Teutonic castle. The first narrow tracks here date from 1886 and carried sugar beets with horse traction. In 1905 the network reached Sztutowo, the German village of Stutthof. After the war the system was gradually dismantled and the remainder was formally closed in 1999. Rail enthusiasts rescued it: the Pomeranian Society of Railway Enthusiasts (PTMKŻ) took over in 2001, the first train ran on 15 August 2002, and regular service began on 21 June 2003. The county of Nowy Dwór Gdański owns the line.
Two lines run: Nowy Dwór Gdański to Stegna Gdańska (about 15 km) and Prawy Brzeg Wisły to Stegna to Sztutowo (about 15 km). You can ride all the way between Nowy Dwór and Sztutowo or change at Stegna. The route passes villages such as Tujsk, Rybina and Popowo, then pine forest near Jantar and Mikoszewo, close to the Baltic and the Vistula. At Rybina the track crosses the Szkarpawa river on a swing bridge that opens for boats during the season.
The Sztutowo Muzeum stop is within walking distance (about 1.7 km) of the Stutthof Museum, a memorial at the site of a Nazi German concentration camp. It is a serious visit, so plan it as a separate part of your day.
The 2026 season ran from 1 May to 27 September: daily from 1 June to 30 August, plus selected days. In winter only occasional special trains run, such as around All Saints' Day, so check the official site. The 2027 timetable had not been published when we checked.
A one-way standard ticket costs 14 PLN (Nowy Dwór to Stegna), 20 PLN (to Jantar or Sztutowo) and 19 to 24 PLN between Stegna, Jantar, Mikoszewo and Sztutowo. Statutory discounts apply. You can pay on the train by card or buy tickets on kolejzulawska.pl or through the moBILET app. Phones: +48 55 247 36 72 and +48 722 239 569. We found no information about English-language service on board, so expect Polish-only announcements.
The narrow-gauge station, Nowy Dwór Gdański Wąskotorowy, is at ul. Dworcowa 29. By car, take the S7 expressway from Gdańsk, about 45 km. There is no regular standard-gauge passenger service to the town, so check bus times or drive. You can also board further along the line at Stegna, Jantar or Mikoszewo.
Combine the ride with the beaches at Jantar and Stegna, the Stutthof Museum in Sztutowo, or cycling along the Vistula dikes.
