Castles
Malbork, Pomeranian
Malbork Castle (pronounced roughly "MAHL-bork") in northern Poland is the largest castle in the world by land area and the former capital of the Teutonic Knights, a crusading order that ruled much of the Baltic coast in the Middle Ages. Its red-brick walls rise above the Nogat River about an hour from Gdańsk, and the whole complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you are visiting Gdańsk or traveling between Warsaw and the coast, it is one of the best day trips in Poland.
The town of Malbork lies in the Pomeranian region, roughly 60 km southeast of Gdańsk on the main rail line between Gdańsk and Warsaw. By car the museum estimates about 50 minutes from Gdańsk and around 4 hours from Warsaw. Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport is about 72 km away, so the castle is easy to combine with a city break on the Baltic coast. The German name of the fortress, Marienburg ("Mary's Castle"), still appears in many history books.
The Teutonic Order began preparing the site around 1278 and started building around 1280, after crushing an uprising of the Old Prussians. In 1309 the Grand Master moved his headquarters here from Venice, turning Malbork into the capital of a powerful monastic state. Over the next century the castle grew into an enormous three-part fortress: the outer walls enclose roughly 21 hectares (52 acres) — about four times the area of Windsor Castle.
After the Battle of Grunwald in 1410, one of the largest battles of medieval Europe, the Polish-Lithuanian army besieged Malbork but failed to take it. The castle finally changed hands in 1457, when unpaid mercenaries sold it to King Casimir IV of Poland. It then served as a Polish royal residence until 1772, when Prussia annexed the region in the First Partition of Poland.
In the 19th century the castle became a national symbol in Germany and was carefully restored from 1882 under architect Conrad Steinbrecht. Fighting in early 1945 destroyed more than half of the complex. Poland has been rebuilding it ever since; the restored Church of the Virgin Mary, with its 8-meter mosaic statue of the Madonna, reopened in 2016. UNESCO listed the "Castle of the Teutonic Order in Malbork" in 1997.
The visit follows the three parts of the fortress:
Allow time to walk around the outside too. The moats, defensive walls and towers are just as impressive as the interiors, and the classic postcard view is from the opposite bank of the Nogat River in the afternoon light.
As of October 2026 (autumn-winter season, October 1, 2026 – April 25, 2027):
Prices are in Polish złoty (PLN):
Mondays are free, but only a limited outdoor route is open and free tickets are issued on the day at the ticket office. The Historical Route is done with a guide or an audio guide; check the official site for current audio-guide languages. Because the museum caps entry at 500 visitors per hour, it is worth booking online in advance through the official ticket shop (bilety.zamek.malbork.pl), especially on summer weekends. Summer hours from late April are published on zamek.malbork.pl.
Yes — if you have any interest in medieval history or architecture, this is one of the highlights of Central Europe. Plan half a day for the full Historical Route, which covers a lot of ground and many stairs; families with younger children can choose a shorter, roughly 2-hour audio-guide variant. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a layer, since the brick interiors stay cool even in summer.
With a combined ticket (90 PLN adult) you can also visit the smaller Teutonic castle in Sztum within 14 days.
