Water Tower in Gołdap

The brick tower on Paderewskiego Street is one of the highest points of Gołdap. Built in 1905 by the Gdańsk company A. W. Müller, on a circular plan of ceramic brick, it rises 46.5 metres. Inside worked a tank holding 250 cubic metres of water for the town water supply system.

A tower that survived the war

During the Second World War the structure remained practically undamaged — time took its toll instead: in 1986 the tank burst and the tower was taken out of service. Since 1991 it has been listed in the Register of Monuments, and in 2008–2009 it underwent a thorough revitalization. On 17 July 2009 it was reopened — this time as a viewing point.

Two terraces above the town

The lower terrace is reached by lift or stairs, and the top floor requires a dozen or so more steps. Higher up, external metal stairs attached to the façade lead to a platform with a full panorama of the town and the surrounding hills. A café operates at the summit, and a souvenir shop stands at the foot of the tower.

In practice

Gołdap, a spa town of about 13,000 residents, lets you combine the tower with other attractions: the brine graduation towers in the Spa Park, the slopes of the Piękna Góra sports centre or the bridges of Stańczyki 22 km away. The tower is open in the summer season, from May to September; entry is paid, children up to 7 enter free. Check the current opening hours before your visit, as they can change outside the high season.
