Poland–Lithuania–Russia Tripoint near Wiżajny

A few hundred metres from the houses of Bolcie, in the Wiżajny district, stands a granite pillar where three countries end: Poland, Lithuania and Russia (the Kaliningrad Oblast). The point is called “Wisztyniec” and it is the northernmost of Poland's six tripoints. The walk is short and well signposted, and the place makes its impression precisely through its plainness: a meadow, a forest, a border post and a strip of frontier that must not be crossed.

A pillar with three coats of arms

The meeting point is marked by a granite pillar bearing the emblems of the three states and inscriptions in each country's language. On the Polish side it reads “Rzeczpospolita Polska” and “Wisztyniec”. An earlier description of the site speaks of a roughly two-metre monolith of pink granite. Warning signs stand nearby: a fence runs along the Russian side, and crossing the border into the Russian Federation is forbidden — Russia is not part of the Schengen Area.

Few people know that this is also an administrative quadripoint: the Podlaskie and Warmian-Masurian voivodeships meet here together with the borders of Lithuania and Russia. That is why the tripoint is described sometimes as lying in the Wiżajny district and sometimes next to the Dubeninki district.

The “Tripoint – Pole of Cold” trail

From the county car park on road 651 (Wiżajny – Żytkiejmy) an educational trail called “Trójstyk granic – biegun zimna” leads to the pillar. It is about 450 m long, and boards along the way explain the history of the borderland and the local wildlife. The last board before the post sets out the rules for the border zone. The name is no accident: the Wiżajny area is regarded as Poland's pole of cold, and an LED display in the car park shows the current temperature.

Did you know?

• Wiżajny, the district seat, was once a town: it received its charter in 1620 and lost its town rights in 1870.
• According to local tradition, King Władysław Jagiełło was entertained in 1409 at the village inn, which was famous for its crayfish.
• A cyclists' rest stop (MOR) on the Green Velo route stands by the tripoint, and a cycling loop of about 63 km through the Suwałki Landscape Park passes nearby.

Tripto tips

Allow 30–45 minutes for the tripoint, including the walk and the boards. The site is open all year and free, but it is a border zone: stay on the path, keep away from the fence and do not photograph the Russian infrastructure at close range. In winter expect genuinely low temperatures, in summer mosquitoes over the meadows. The tripoint combines well with a tour of northern Suwałki Region — to Lake Wiżajny or towards Lake Hańcza.
