Suwałki District Museum

The Suwałki District Museum (Muzeum Okręgowe w Suwałkach; say "soo-VOW-kee") is the main museum of the Suwałki region in far northeastern Poland, housed in a handsome early-20th-century building in the town center. It holds Poland's largest collection of works by Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski, a Suwałki-born painter who made his name in Munich, plus an archaeology exhibition on the region's prehistory and the vanished Baltic tribe of the Yotvingians. It is a perfect rainy-day or winter stop – and permanent exhibitions are free on Sundays.

History of the museum

The building was put up in 1912–1913 for a local savings and loan society founded in 1900, and later also served Polish social and cultural organizations. In 1956 part of it was given to a newly forming community museum, the forerunner of today's institution. The historic building has undergone a major renovation costing over 8 million PLN, and further facade work is planned. In September 2026 the museum laid the first beam of a planned Yotvingian Archaeological Center.

What to see

• Alfred Wierusz-Kowalski (1849–1915) – three rooms dedicated to the painter, born in Suwałki and a leading figure of the Munich school, famous for his horses, sleigh rides and village scenes; paintings, family documents, mementos and furniture.
• "The Oldest History: the Suwałki Region and Eastern Masuria from the End of the Ice Age to the Fall of the Yotvingians" – an archaeology exhibition on the region's prehistory.
• "Along the Path of History" – documents, photographs and everyday objects from the town's past.

Allow 1–1.5 hours. Ground-floor permanent exhibitions are visited with a museum guide; labels and guiding are mainly in Polish.

• September 1 – June 30: Tuesday–Friday 8 am–4 pm (last entry 3:15 pm), Saturday–Sunday 9 am–5 pm; closed Mondays.
• July–August: Tuesday–Sunday 9 am–5 pm.
• Tickets: adult 24 PLN, reduced 18 PLN (students up to 25, seniors), family 60 PLN (2 adults + 1–5 children); children under 5 free.
• Free admission to permanent exhibitions every Sunday.
• Accessibility: the building and galleries are wheelchair-accessible; dogs are allowed on a leash and muzzled.

Who it's for and tips

The museum suits families (there is a family ticket), fans of 19th-century painting and anyone who wants some background before heading to Wigry or Lake Hańcza. The museum recommends two free apps, "Muzeum Suwałki" and "Suwałki audioprzewodnik po mieście" (a town audio guide). Coats and larger bags go in the cloakroom.

How to get there

The museum is on Suwałki's main street, a few minutes' walk from the center. Suwałki is about 300 km (roughly 4 hours) northeast of Warsaw via the S8 and S61 (Via Baltica) expressways, with direct trains from Warsaw and Białystok. Street parking in the center is paid.
