Wigry, Podlachia
Wigry Monastery is a former Camaldolese hermitage on a peninsula in Lake Wigry, a short drive from Suwałki in northeastern Poland. Its white late-Baroque church towers, row of little hermit houses and lakeside setting make it the best-known postcard view of the Suwałki region and the highlight of Wigry National Park. Come for the crypts of the hermit monks, the papal apartments, the clock-tower views and a stroll through the courtyards.
King John II Casimir founded the hermitage on January 6, 1667, for the "Hermitage of Wigry Island" – the hill was then an island. The Camaldolese monks, a strict contemplative order, arrived in 1668, managed vast estates and in 1715 founded the town of Suwałki. The late-Baroque Church of the Immaculate Conception was built in the first half of the 18th century.
After the Third Partition of Poland, the Prussian authorities confiscated the order's estates (1796), and the monastery was dissolved in 1805; the monks moved to Bielany in Warsaw. Artillery fire badly damaged the church in 1915, and rebuilding began in interwar Poland. From 1975 to 2010 the complex was a creative retreat run by the Ministry of Culture; today it belongs to the Church and is run by the Wigry Pro Foundation. Pope John Paul II stayed here in June 1999.

QR codes around the site link to audio descriptions in English, Polish, German and Russian. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
Some hermit houses are rented as guest rooms, and there is a restaurant and a tavern on site, plus a café in season. The church is still a working parish church. The annual Wigry Fair takes place on August 15–16, and light-and-sound shows are held in the courtyard after sunset in summer.
Wigry lies east of Suwałki inside Wigry National Park, a short drive from town. Suwałki is roughly 300 km (about 4 hours) northeast of Warsaw via the S8 and S61 expressways and has rail links with Warsaw and Białystok; from Suwałki you will need a car, taxi or bike. Summer evenings, when the church is reflected in the lake, are the most photogenic; off-season visits are quiet despite shorter hours.
