Lake Serwy

More than 40 metres deep, with clear water and a quiet zone where motorboats are banned, Lake Serwy lies on the edge of the Augustów Forest, about 20 km from Augustów. For years it has drawn people looking for swimming, canoeing and woodland rather than a crowded promenade. The name is thought to come from the Yotvingian word sirvis, meaning "grey".

The lake in numbers

Serwy covers about 438–460 ha (sources differ) and runs north to south. Its average depth is around 14 m and the maximum 41.5 m, making it one of the deeper lakes in the region. Tests in 2017 rated the water as quality class II; it is a stratified, calcium-rich lake with stonewort beds. Water from Serwy feeds the Augustów Canal system, which is why the area is well known to canoeists.

Shores, islands and villages

The shoreline is moderately indented, with high banks and plenty of sandy beaches. Forest covers the southern shore, while fields stretch along the north. There are three islands: Dębowo, Lipówka and Sosnowo, where a cormorant reserve has been established. The villages of Serwy, Mołowiste and Sucha Rzeczka sit by the water, with holiday centres, campsites, jetties and equipment hire.

Bathing areas

For the 2026 season the official bathing-water service listed a beach at Camp Serwy (23 June – 1 September) and one at Proserwy (24 June – 1 September). Dates and lifeguard hours change every year, so check the current water-quality notice before you go. Bear in mind that not every access point is a designated bathing area, and the steep drop-offs in such a deep lake call for care.

Tripto tip

Make a full day of it: canoe or pedal boat in the morning, when the water is calmest, then swim and walk the forest tracks in the afternoon. Watch the cormorants from the water at a distance and keep away from the Sosnowo reserve. Experienced divers value the clarity here, but only dive with a dive centre or a buddy. Mobile signal can be weak in the forest, and in high season it pays to book accommodation early.
