Augustów Canal

The Augustów Canal (pronounced roughly "ow-GOOS-toof") is a 19th-century waterway in northeastern Poland that links the Vistula and Neman river basins, running from the Biebrza River through the lakes around Augustów to the Neman in Belarus. Protected as a national Historic Monument since 2007, it is one of the best-preserved canals of its era in Europe, and a lovely way to explore the forests and lakes of the Suwałki region by boat, kayak or bike.

A canal built to dodge Prussian tariffs

The canal was built between 1824 and 1839 in the Russian-ruled Kingdom of Poland, designed by General Ignacy Prądzyński. The motive was a customs war: Prussia charged heavy duties on Polish grain shipped down the Vistula to Gdańsk, so planners wanted an alternative route to the Baltic via the Neman. Ironically, Prussia dropped the high tariffs in 1825, the planned onward link to the Baltic port of Ventspils was never built, and the November Uprising of 1830–31 halted construction for years. Boats finally began using the canal in 1839.

Today the canal is about 101 km long (the town of Augustów quotes 103.4 km), with roughly 80 km in Poland. Between 2008 and 2010 it was a joint Polish–Belarusian candidate for the UNESCO World Heritage List; the nomination was withdrawn for revision.

The locks: what to see

There are 18 locks in total – 14 on the Polish side, the border lock at Kurzyniec and three in Belarus. Together they lift boats about 15 m between the Biebrza and Augustów and 41 m on the way down to the Neman. Highlights for visitors:

• Przewięź – a small, picturesque lock between two lakes on the boat route to Studzieniczna,
• Paniewo – the only two-chamber lock on the Polish side,
• Mikaszówka – a favorite stop for kayakers and cyclists deep in the Augustów Forest,
• Swoboda, Gorczyca, Perkuć, Sosnówek and Tartak – a chain of forest locks that makes an easy day trip by car or bike.

You can look at most locks from the bank for free. The best moment is when a boat passes through and staff open the wooden gates by hand.

Things to do: cruise, kayak or cycle

Boat trips are the easiest option. Żegluga Augustowska runs cruises from Augustów, including the three-hour "Papal" route to the Studzieniczna sanctuary through Przewięź lock (Pope John Paul II sailed this route in June 1999) and a one-hour trip into the Rospuda Valley.

Kayaking is the region's classic activity, as the canal connects with the Czarna Hańcza River. Rental companies operate mainly from May to September. Cycling and hiking routes follow the canal; a green-marked trail leads from Augustów to Mikaszówka. Allow one day to see several locks by car or bike, or several days to paddle the Polish section.

Is it worth visiting in fall and winter?

The 2026 navigation season opened on April 24 between the Biebrza and Kudrynki lock. Kurzyniec lock on the Belarusian border remains closed (the border crossing is shut, entry to the border zone is restricted and the lock needs repairs), so you cannot sail through to the Neman.

Services wind down quickly in October: Żegluga Augustowska is running only occasional sailings in October 2026, with the last Studzieniczna trips scheduled for mid-month. After the 2025 season, Poland's water authority (Wody Polskie) limited lock operations from November 1 to weekdays 8 am–2 pm, on one day's notice and only until the canal froze; expect similar rules in winter 2026/27. In winter, come for walks and photos rather than boat trips.

How to get to the Augustów Canal

Augustów lies on the S61 expressway (Via Baltica), about 260 km (around 3–3.5 hours) northeast of Warsaw and about 90 km north of Białystok. Trains from Warsaw and Białystok toward Suwałki stop in Augustów. The cruise harbor is in the town center on the Netta River; the locks at Przewięź and Swoboda are along the road to Studzieniczna and Płaska.
