Różanystok Sanctuary

The Różanystok Sanctuary (say “roo-ZHAH-nee-stok”) is a late-Baroque minor basilica and one of the main Catholic pilgrimage sites in Podlasie, Poland's quiet north-eastern corner near the borders with Belarus and Lithuania. Its twin-towered church rises unexpectedly above a small village and fields, and inside you will find Rococo altars and a venerated image of the Virgin Mary crowned in 1981. It is an easy detour on the road from Warsaw or Białystok toward Lithuania.

Where it is and how to get there

Różanystok lies about 5 km from Dąbrowa Białostocka and, according to the sanctuary, about 75 km from Białystok and 250 km from Warsaw (around 3 to 3.5 hours by car). The village has its own railway stop on the Białystok–Suwałki line: local trains stop at Różanystok station, about 800 m from the basilica, while faster trains stop in Dąbrowa Białostocka. By car, take road 673 from Białystok and turn off at Nierośno or Brzozowo, or leave route 8 at Suchowola onto road 670.

History

The painting of the Virgin and Child was made in Grodno in 1652 by Jan Szretter and bought by the nobleman Szczęsny Tyszkiewicz. From 1658 unusual events were reported around it, including a lamp lighting itself and the scent of roses, and a church commission accepted more than 30 of them. Dominican friars took over in 1663, when the village got its name, roughly “rose slope.”

The present church was begun in 1759, modeled on the Jesuit church in Grodno, and consecrated in 1785. After Tsar Nicholas I dissolved the order, the church was turned into an Orthodox church in 1866. In 1915 Orthodox nuns fleeing the front took the original painting deep into Russia; it never returned. A new image, blessed by Pope Pius XI, was installed in 1929. The Salesians have run the sanctuary since 1919.

What to see

• the twin-towered facade,
• the three-aisled interior with Rococo altars,
• the image of Our Lady of Różanystok in the main altar, crowned on June 28, 1981 before some 250,000 pilgrims,
• a 32-stop organ from 1925 by the Warsaw firm of Wacław Biernacki.

The church was named a minor basilica in 1987.

Practical information (as of October 2026)

Entry is free; this is an active parish. Sunday Masses are at 7:30, 9:00, 10:30 a.m., noon and 4:00 p.m.; weekday Masses at 6:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Avoid walking around during services. Groups can request a guided tour of the basilica, and there are restrooms and a religious gift shop. Services and signs are in Polish. Allow 45 to 60 minutes.

When to come

The biggest crowds arrive for the main feast days; back in 1923 the papal nuncio came for the Pentecost celebrations with his secretary, Giovanni Battista Montini, the future Pope Paul VI. For a quiet visit, pick an ordinary weekday. The sanctuary also keeps a regular rhythm: a novena to Our Lady of Różanystok on the 15th to 23rd of every month, a prayer evening on the second Saturday, and from May to September an adoration chapel open Monday to Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Is it worth visiting?

If you are interested in sacred art, Poland's complicated eastern history or you are driving toward Vilnius, yes. Combine it with other Podlasie shrines nearby, such as Sokółka, Lipsk or Studzieniczna. Prices in the region are in złoty (PLN).
