Lake Necko

Linguists trace the lake's name to the Yotvingian word methis, meaning "to throw", and a document from 1396 records it as Meten. Necko is a glacial ribbon lake that makes Augustów both a town and a resort: the town shore has beaches, promenades and the 147-metre Radio Three Pier, and the Netta River flows out of the lake to join the Augustów Canal. About 70 per cent of the shoreline is wooded, so a few minutes from the centre you can walk in peace.

The lake and its surroundings

To the north Necko joins Lake Rospuda Augustowska, and via the Klonownica stream (also called Cicha Rzeczka) it connects with Lake Białe. To the south the Netta River leaves the lake and becomes part of the Augustów Canal waterway, which is why tour boats sail here. The Augustów districts of Borki, Zarzecze and Klonownica lie on the shore. The lake is in the "Augustów Forest and Lakes" protected landscape area. Fish include vendace, pike, perch and tench, as well as eel and whitefish.

What to see and do

• The town beach with the Radio Three Pier (Molo Radiowej Trójki): the pier runs 147 metres along the shore with viewing platforms and snack bars. According to the town, in season there are four lit swimming areas next to it, guarded by lifeguards.
• Postiw beach with a wooden jetty and an electric water-ski cable.
• Bielnik by the Marina resort, with jetties, a swimming area and a beach volleyball court.
• A promenade and cycle path along the shore from the Netta to the Klonownica, lit in the evening.
• Boat trips on the lake and the Augustów Canal, plus kayak and water sports rentals.
• The building on Biała Góra from 1939, a former PTTK tourist hostel designed by architect Maciej Nowicki, now a hotel.

Interesting facts

Remains of Second World War trenches survive in the woods around the lake. Necko is sung about in the Polish hit "Beata z Albatrosa" by Janusz Laskowski, and the Polish Navy minesweeper ORP Necko, in service since 1989, is named after it. Old records show how the name changed over the centuries: Meten (1396), Methis (1418), Nyeczko (1515), Niecko (1770).

Walk the pier and promenades in the morning before the crowds, then pick a beach or a rental point. If you plan a boat trip, check the route through the Netta and the Augustów Canal and the return time in advance. Swimming areas only operate in season, with their own hours and rules: for 2026 the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate listed the Plaża Budowlani swimming area as open from 27 June to 31 August, 10:00–18:00, and it is worth checking the latest water-quality notice before swimming. Out of season the lake is still good for walking and cycling, although some services close. Allow 1–2 hours for a walk along the shore and pier, or a whole day for a beach day.
