Lake Wigry

Lake Wigry (say "VEE-grih") is the largest lake in the Suwałki region of northeastern Poland and the heart of Wigry National Park, near the Lithuanian border. Long, winding and dotted with bays, peninsulas and islands, it is crowned by the white former Camaldolese monastery on its Monastery Peninsula. Just outside the town of Suwałki, it is one of Poland's deepest and most valuable lakes for wildlife, and a superb base for sailing, canoeing, cycling and a glass-bottom boat trip.

Lake Wigry in numbers

• Area: about 2,115–2,118 hectares (roughly 8 square miles), Poland's 10th-largest lake.
• Maximum depth: 73–74 m (about 240 ft), the 5th-deepest in Poland; average about 15.5 m.
• Length: 17.5 km; width up to 3.55 km.
• Islands: around 19, covering about 70 ha in total.

The lake formed after the last Ice Age and has three distinct basins. Its biggest peninsulas include Wysoki Wągieł, about 4 km long. The Czarna Hańcza River flows through it, and channels link it to more than a dozen other lakes. The name comes from the old form "Wingry," traced to the language of the Yotvingians, an extinct Baltic people, and meaning something winding. Chronicler Jan Długosz recorded it in 1418 when describing a royal hunt. In 1975 the lake was placed on the IUCN's "Aqua" list of the world's most valuable lakes, and around 140 bird species have been recorded in its reed beds.

Top things to do at Lake Wigry

• Visit the Wigry monastery, the former Camaldolese hermitage on the Monastery Peninsula, where Pope John Paul II rested in 1999. A viewing platform stands at the tip of the peninsula.
• See the Wigry Museum in Stary Folwark, housed in a prewar hydrobiological station where Professor Alfred Lityński, the father of Polish limnology, worked.
• Take the Leptodora III, an electric boat with a glass bottom, on a roughly 45-minute trip led by park staff.
• Cycle around the lake on the 46 km green "Around Wigry" trail, with viewpoints at Bryzgiel, Gawrych Ruda, Mikołajewo and Krusznik.
• Paddle the Czarna Hańcza canoe trail, one of Poland's most popular, which starts on Lake Wigry; the stretch from Gawrych Ruda to the lake's outflow is about 18 km.
• Go sailing: marinas with yacht rental lie at both ends of the lake.

Tickets and rules (as of October 2026)

• A Wigry National Park entry card is required on trails, educational paths and park waters, including in a canoe: 10 PLN per day (under US$3), 5 PLN reduced; weekly 20/10 PLN. Buy it online (wpn.eparki.pl), at the visitor center in Krzywe or at local sales points.
• Children under 7 are exempt, as are visitors staying only on the public beaches at Krzywe and Stary Folwark.
• Wigry Museum: 20 PLN, reduced 10 PLN, family 40 PLN; open daily 9 am–3 pm from September to June (last entry 30 minutes before closing).
• Glass-bottom boat: 30 PLN, reduced 20 PLN; in October, weekday trips for groups or bookings of at least five tickets, reservation required.
• Dogs are banned from strictly and actively protected areas, including the water.

How to get to Lake Wigry

Suwałki has rail links to Białystok and Warsaw. From the town, Stary Folwark and the monastery are a short drive along the road toward Sejny; park headquarters and the visitor center are at Krzywe 82. Vilnius in Lithuania is also within reach, making Wigry a good stop on a Poland–Baltics road trip.

Is Lake Wigry worth visiting in winter?

Boat trips and sailing end in autumn. In winter 2026/27 the lake may freeze, but the ice is uneven, partly because the Czarna Hańcza flows through it, so stay off it. The park maintains classic cross-country ski trails near Krzywe and Słupie Bay when there is snow, and the Wigry Museum stays open daily until 3 pm.
