Kraków Gorge in the Tatra Mountains

Kraków Gorge (Wąwóz Kraków, "VAH-voos KRAH-koof") is a narrow limestone ravine in Poland's Western Tatra Mountains, branching off the popular Kościeliska Valley near Zakopane. Its short, one-way yellow trail is a little adventure: an iron ladder up a near-vertical wall, chains, and a passage through a small cave called Smocza Jama (the Dragon's Den). It is one of the most rewarding side trips you can add to a day in Tatra National Park, with no high-mountain experience needed.

Where it is and how to get there

The gorge lies in the Tatra National Park (TPN), Poland's best-known mountain park on the Slovak border. Most visitors base themselves in Zakopane, about two hours by road from Kraków and its airport. The hike starts at Kiry, the entrance to the Kościeliska Valley on the road from Zakopane toward Witów; there are car parks at the valley entrance, but they fill up in peak season. From Kiry, walk the green trail along the valley floor for roughly 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes to the Polana Pisana meadow, where the gorge begins. Allow 3–4 hours for the whole outing.

Why it is called Kraków

Local highlanders who visited Kraków thought the narrow lanes of its Old Town looked like this rocky corridor. The surrounding crags were given city names too — Ratusz (Town Hall), Baszta (Tower) and Kościół (Church) — and a wider spot on the floor became Rynek, the Market Square. The full gorge is about 3 km long, but only the lower part is open; the much larger upper section is under strict protection, closed even to climbers.

The trail through the Dragon's Den

The yellow trail starts at Polana Pisana, takes about 50–55 minutes and is one-way. Roughly 100 m in, an iron ladder climbs a nearly vertical rock face on the left to the mouth of Smocza Jama, a short tunnel that leads you back toward the meadow. Chains and metal clamps help on the tricky bits, and you can bypass the cave on the rock outside. Bring a flashlight or headlamp.

The gorge was carved by karst — over 120 caves are known here — and its floor is usually dry because water drains underground to a spring beneath Skała Pisana. In spring, snow lingers in the shaded ravine; in winter the route can be icy.

Tickets and hours (as of October 2026)

• A Tatra National Park entry ticket is required: PLN 11 regular, PLN 5.50 reduced; 7-day tickets PLN 55 / 27.50.
• Free for children under 7.
• Buy at the Kościeliska Valley ticket booth, online on the TPN website or via QR codes at the entrance. The booth is staffed 7 a.m.–4 p.m. in October (until 3 p.m. from October 15), 7 a.m.–2 p.m. in November and 8 a.m.–2 p.m. in December.

Is it worth it?

Yes — it is short, atmospheric and quite unlike the open alpine trails elsewhere in the Tatras. The ladder and chains are easy for most active walkers but may unsettle anyone afraid of heights. Avoid it in wet or icy conditions, and leave strollers at home.
