Kościeliska Valley — a Tatra walk

Kościeliska Valley is a classic Tatra walk. The green trail starts at Kiry and follows the Kościeliski Stream through limestone rocks and clearings. The main goal is the PTTK mountain shelter on Hala Ornak, reached from Kiry in about 1 hour 30 minutes. It is gentler than high-mountain trails, but the stony surface calls for proper hiking shoes.

Caves and Wąwóz Kraków

The valley’s main highlights are the side trails to its caves. Near Wyżnia Kościeliska Brama, paths lead to Mylna, Raptawicka and Obłazkowa caves. At Polana Pisana, a yellow trail enters Wąwóz Kraków and continues towards Smocza Jama. Mroźna Cave has its own route and entry rules. These are not all ordinary walks: the cave approaches include steep, rocky sections, and the interiors can be wet and dark. Hala Ornak and practical planning

Cars can reach only the Kiry area; from there the valley is explored on foot. For a fee, highlander horse carts carry visitors as far as Polana Pisana, while sleighs run there in winter, shortening the walk to the shelter. From Hala Ornak, a black trail reaches Smreczyński Pond in around 30 minutes. More demanding options cross Iwaniacka Pass towards Chochołowska Valley, or follow the green trail through Tomanowa Valley towards Ciemniak and the Czerwone Wierchy ridge. Entry to Tatra National Park is paid. Check the park bulletin and forecast, especially if you plan to visit caves or continue higher.
