Opolski Bifyj Culinary Trail

In Silesian dialect, "bifyj" is not a dish but a kitchen dresser – the cupboard that stood in almost every Upper Silesian kitchen, holding provisions, holiday treats and the best tableware. This piece of furniture gave its name to the culinary trail of the Opole region, created in 2015 by the Opole Regional Tourist Organisation (OROT). It is not a route to walk but a network of certified restaurants and patisseries serving dishes from the Opole region's List of Traditional Products.

How a venue joins

Only venues from Opole Province that pass a certification process run by a panel appointed by OROT can join. A restaurant must have at least 4 regional dishes on its menu making up a full meal (e.g. soup, main course, dessert); a patisserie or other venue needs at least 3 products from the traditional list. Members display the trail's logo. According to the trail's website, the aim is to save the cuisine of Opole Silesia, its history and local customs from oblivion.

What to eat

The organiser gives Śląskie Niebo ("Silesian Heaven"), siemieniotka (hemp-seed soup), wodzionka (bread-and-garlic soup) and kartoffelsalat as examples, with śliszki, krajanki and kołocz śląski (Silesian crumble cake) for dessert. These are only part of the long List of Traditional Products of Opole Province, which also includes Opole kroszonki (decorated Easter eggs), home-made noodles from Makowice and honey beer. Many venues serve regional classics alongside their own creations, so ask for the dishes marked with the trail logo.

Where to eat

In October 2026 the trail's website listed 21 venues: from hotel restaurants in Opole (including DeSilva, Mercure, Szara Willa and Opolanka) to the restaurant at Moszna Castle and the Magosz patisserie. OROT's "Opolskie Smaki" guide gives addresses, for example for the Bajka restaurant in Grodziec and Hotel Antek in Źlinice. The list changes after each certification round, so check the current line-up before you go.

Awards

• 2015 – the guidebook "Opolski Bifyj – a friendly culinary guide" won the main Magellan Award in the culinary guide category.
• 15 December 2022 – Polish Tourist Organisation certificate for the Best Tourist Product 2022.
• 18 September 2025 – Laurel of Polish Culinary Tourism, presented at the Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanów.
