Market Square in Krapkowice

Krapkowice lie in Upper Silesia, in a place crossed by the Odra and Osobłoga rivers. The market square has preserved a typically medieval layout: around a fairly large square stand old town houses lined up side by side, cut through by narrow streets. The town has 15,282 inhabitants (figures as of 1 January 2024), and its market square remains the centre of everyday life.

Melusine in the middle of the square

The greatest ornament of the square is a fountain with a figure of Melusine — a legendary creature, half woman, half mermaid. The heroine of local legends has moved under the open sky, and in summer her surroundings turn into the most pleasant corner of the square.

The oldest town house

The title of the oldest belongs to the house at Market Square 4, dating from the 17th century. Its front has remained unchanged since 1784 — for almost two and a half centuries the building has looked the same from the outside, which makes it a rarity in the Opole region. The rest of the frontages complete the picture of old burgher architecture.

In practice

The square is open at any time, without tickets. A visit can be combined with a walk towards the Odra and Osobłoga rivers, which cross the town, while the houses around the square host shops and service outlets. Krapkowice lie in the Krapkowice county, between Opole and the industrial part of Upper Silesia — it is worth interrupting a journey through the area right here.
