Copernicus Trail

A driving trail of about 300 km follows the traces of Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) through Warmia, Mazuria and Powiśle — via Olsztyn, Lidzbark Warmiński, Orneta, Elbląg, Olsztynek and Frombork. On the ground the route is marked with an astrolabe symbol.

The astronomer’s places

In Olsztyn, Copernicus spent several years at the castle of the Warmia chapter and took part in the town’s defence against the Teutonic Knights — the assault was repelled at the Mill Gate. In Lidzbark Warmiński his uncle, Bishop Łukasz Watzenrode, resided in the Gothic castle; it was he who took care of the boy after his father’s death. The culmination of the route is Frombork, where the astronomer lived in the last decades of his life, completed “On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres”, died in 1543 and was buried in the cathedral; today it houses the Nicolaus Copernicus Museum.

Astronomy within reach

The trail links monuments from Copernicus’s times with museum exhibitions, a planetarium and astronomical observatories, making it a ready-made itinerary for a science-themed trip. The year 2023 was the Copernicus Year — the 550th anniversary of the scholar’s birth was celebrated with events and exhibitions in the towns along the route.

In practice

The route is available all year round; individual sites are ticketed separately, so check opening hours before arriving. The optimal plan is 2–3 days with overnight stays in Olsztyn or Frombork; the towns are linked by convenient regional roads, and the sections can be combined with visits to Warmia’s Gothic churches.
