Nida River Kayak Trail

The Nida is the longest river in the Świętokrzyskie region and one of the gentlest kayak routes in Poland. The waymarked trail from Brzegi to Nowy Korczyn is 92.7 km long and runs through the Ponidzie area past the castle in Sobków, Pińczów, Chroberz and Wiślica. Warm water and a sandy bottom mean you can swim almost anywhere along the way. Beyond Motkowice your kayak enters something found nowhere else in Poland: an inland river delta.

The river and the route

The Nida forms where the Biała (White) and Czarna (Black) Nida meet near Żerniki in Sobków municipality, and it flows into the Vistula near Nowy Korczyn. Including the Biała Nida it is 151 km long; the kayak trail itself starts in Brzegi, at a beach just upstream of the S7 expressway viaduct. The local kayak guide "Królestwo Nidy" (Kingdom of the Nida) allows at least 3 days for the whole trail, or up to a week with sightseeing stops. It is a classic lowland river: a dozen or several dozen metres wide, shallow, full of sandbars and oxbow lakes. In summer the water reaches 27°C, making the Nida one of Poland's warmest rivers.

What you see from the kayak

• Sobków (approx. km 6) – the 16th-century fortified manor of Stanisław Sobek with walls and bastions, now with a restaurant and guest rooms.
• Rębów hydropower plant (km 18.6) – a compulsory portage of about 50 m, best on the right bank.
• Motkowice and the delta (from km 21.3) – the river splits into several parallel channels that only rejoin near Sobowice. The "Life4Delta" restoration project is bringing back floodplain forest, oxbows and the European pond turtle.
• Bridge of the "Ciuchcia Ekspres Ponidzie" (km 24.5) – the Pińczów–Jędrzejów narrow-gauge railway runs in season; there is a riffle under the bridge, keep right.
• Pińczów (km 39) – St Anne's Chapel of 1600 by Santi Gucci, a synagogue and monasteries.
• Chroberz (km 51.6) – a canoe station with jetties and a campsite, plus the Wielopolski palace.
• Wiślica (km 73.3) – a landing with shelters, a short walk from the 14th-century collegiate church.
• Nowy Korczyn (km 92.7) – a large landing, synagogue ruins and a Gothic Franciscan church.

Obstacles and difficulty

The trail is rated easy and recommended for beginners and families with children, but it is not free of obstacles. The upper section has portages at Brzeźno, Rębów and the weirs near Motkowice and Sobowice, plus several riffles. At low water the shallows force you out of the boat; at high water the current speeds up and obstacles hide below the surface. The calmest stretch is below Pińczów: from Chroberz to Wiślica the river winds in wide loops through meadows.

Tripto tip

For a first trip choose Wiślica – Nowy Korczyn (about 20 km, one day) or Chroberz – Wiślica (about 22 km). The campsite in Wiślica lets you link two days without looking for accommodation. On the upper section allow time for portages and avoid starting at high water. Most trips end in Nowy Korczyn, but the Vistula confluence is about 5 km further: you can paddle on to the village of Raj and land about 100 m from the mouth. Summer is the best season, when the water is warmest.
