Nida River Kayak Trail

Paddling the Nida covers about 102 km of a gentle lowland river in the Ponidzie region, from the bridge on national road No. 7 down to the mouth on the Vistula below Nowy Korczyn. The river’s source is taken to be the Biała Nida; together the two branches — Biała and Czarna — measure just over 150 km.

The lazy river of Ponidzie

The Nida flows through the Nida Basin, along the Nadnidziański Landscape Park and Natura 2000 areas. In summer the water warms up to 27°C, and the river counts among the sunniest in Poland, so paddling mixes well with swimming. The route is considered easy; the only obstacles are remains of old mills, fallen trees and sandy shallows that sometimes require a short portage.

Castles, collegiate churches, towers

At the start in Sobków stands a Gothic knights’ castle now serving as a hotel; halfway you can detour to Pińczów, and lower down await Chroberz with lodging options and Wiślica with its collegiate church, the Długosz House and Romanesque relics. The final Nowy Korczyn is a former town full of heritage right at the mouth. Campsites operate along the river — among others below Wiślica and in Jurków.

In practice

Summer is the best season; in spring the river bursts its banks and spreads across the meadows in strong meanders. The trip divides conveniently into 4–5 one-day sections; supplies can be found in Sobków, Motkowice and Brzeźno. At kilometre 77 the route passes the narrow-gauge tracks of the “Expres Ponidzie” — a summer attraction that complements the voyage.
