Cistercian Abbey in Jędrzejów

The Cistercian Archabbey in Jędrzejów (YEN-dzheh-yoof), a town in south-central Poland between Kraków and Kielce, is the oldest Cistercian monastery in the country, founded in 1140 by monks from Morimond in France. It is also the shrine of Blessed Vincent Kadłubek, the medieval chronicler and bishop of Kraków who spent his final years here. Behind its Baroque façade lie Romanesque walls, Gothic cloisters and one of Poland's most remarkable 18th-century organs – and you can visit with a monk as your guide.

A French foundation in medieval Poland

The Cistercians were brought from the Burgundian abbey of Morimond by Janik of the Gryfita family, later archbishop of Gniezno, and his brother Klemens. Founded as a daughter house of Morimond, the monastery was nicknamed Morimondus Minor (Little Morimond) and became a full abbey in 1149. The town of Jędrzejów grew from its monastic settlement. In 1210 the new church was consecrated by Vincent Kadłubek, then bishop of Kraków.

Later centuries were turbulent. A fire in 1800 destroyed the library, Tsar Alexander I dissolved the order in 1819, and the Russian authorities turned the buildings into a hospital and later a teachers' college. The Cistercians only returned in 1945, and the monastery regained abbey status in 1989. In September 2026 the church was elevated to a minor basilica.

Vincent Kadłubek, Poland's first great writer

Master Vincent wrote the Chronica Polonorum, a Latin history of Poland, and attended the Fourth Lateran Council in Rome. Five years before his death he resigned as bishop and retired to Jędrzejów, where he died on March 8, 1223. He was beatified in 1764, and his relics rest in a chapel inside the basilica.

• the basilica, Late Romanesque at its core with Gothic and Baroque additions; part of its west wall predates 1140
• the chapel of Blessed Vincent Kadłubek, with 18th-century wall paintings
• the Sitarski organ, built in 1745–1752 and at the time the largest in Poland; its pedal pipes stand on a Romanesque gallery from the early 12th century
• the cloister courtyard and the Baroque bell tower by the gate

Visiting the abbey (as of October 2026)

This is a working monastery and parish, so the basilica and parts of the monastery can only be toured with a monk. Book ahead by phone with Brother Alberyk Szymański OCist at +48 729 767 011. Admission is free; visitors are asked for a voluntary donation for the guide, in Polish złoty (PLN). An organ demonstration can sometimes be arranged with the organist. Tours are normally in Polish, so ask when booking whether an English-speaking guide is available. Allow about an hour.

How to get to Jędrzejów

The abbey stands at Klasztorna 20 on the northwestern edge of town, close to the S7 expressway linking Kraków and Kielce, which makes it an easy detour on a road trip between the two cities. Kraków's international airport is the nearest major gateway.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you are interested in medieval history, church music or the Cistercian Route, which also includes the abbeys at Wąchock, Sulejów and Koprzywnica. While in town, visit the Przypkowski Museum, famous for its collection of sundials.
