Open-Air Museum of the Kielce Region in Tokarnia

The Tokarnia open-air museum (Tokarnia is pronounced roughly "toh-KAR-nyah"), officially the Ethnographic Park of the Museum of the Kielce Countryside, is one of the largest heritage villages in Poland. Spread over more than 65 hectares in the Czarna Nida valley of central-southern Poland, it brings together dozens of relocated wooden buildings: farmsteads, windmills, a water mill, a manor house and an 18th-century larch church. It is one of the best places to see rural Poland as it was before industrialization.

Where it is and how to get there

Tokarnia is a village in the Chęciny municipality, Świętokrzyskie region, about 20 km southwest of the city of Kielce. The park sits on the old Kielce–Kraków road (E77), so it is an easy stop on a road trip: from Kraków it is roughly 95–100 km north via the S7 expressway, usually a little over an hour by car. Kraków's airport is the closest major international gateway. There is a large free parking lot at the entrance, including disabled spaces. Regional buses and minibuses from Kielce toward Jędrzejów stop in the village; check current timetables before you go.

A short history

The museum was established in 1976 and opened to visitors in 1977, based on a concept by the ethnographer Roman Reinfuss. Buildings were moved here from across the historic Kielce region and grouped into themed sectors — small-town, upland, Świętokrzyskie Mountains, loess plateau, manor and farm, and Vistula riverside — so a walk through the park is also a walk across the region's landscapes. The museum marks its 50th anniversary in 2026.

What to see

• The church from Rogów — a Baroque larch-wood church dedicated to Our Lady of Consolation, dated 1763, with original 18th-century furnishings.
• The cottage from Szydłów, dated 1705 by an inscription on its main beam — the oldest known folk building in the Kielce region. Inside is a re-created home and workshop of a poor Jewish tailor from the 1920s–30s, a quiet reminder of the Jewish communities that were part of small-town life here before World War II.
• The Suchedniów manor house, the centerpiece of the manor-and-farm sector.
• Windmills and mills, including post mills from Dębno and Janik and the water mill from Parszów.
• Granaries, the oldest from Rogów (1684), plus craftsmen's interiors such as a pharmacy and a village shop, and a collection of folk sculpture by Jan Bernasiewicz.

Tickets and opening hours (as of October 2026)

• October hours: daily 9:00 am–5:00 pm, ticket office until 4:30 pm. From November to March the park is open 9:00 am–3:00 pm. It closes on major public holidays (for example November 1 and 11, Christmas and Easter).
• Tickets until October 31: adult 30 PLN, reduced 20 PLN, family (2+2) 80 PLN. Winter prices from November 1: 20 / 15 / 50 PLN.
• Free admission on Mondays that are not public holidays — but only to the grounds, without access to the interiors. Children under 7 always go free.
• Guided tours in a foreign language can be booked for groups (from 350 PLN per group); signage is mainly in Polish, so a guide or the museum's online map helps.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially if you are already in Kielce, Chęciny or driving between Kraków and Warsaw. Plan 3–4 hours: distances between sectors are long and paths are grass and gravel, so wear comfortable shoes. The museum rents out tourist carts (30 PLN per day) and folk costumes. Families will appreciate the open space, farm animals and seasonal events; avoid Mondays if you want to see the furnished interiors.

Nearby

The ruined Royal Castle in Chęciny overlooks the valley a few kilometers away, and the Raj Cave near Chęciny is one of Poland's most beautiful show caves. In Kielce itself, the Kadzielnia quarry reserve makes a good short stop.
