Kadzielnia Nature Reserve in Kielce

Kadzielnia (pronounced "kah-JEL-nyah") in Kielce is a former limestone quarry right inside the city, now a geological nature reserve with dramatic rock walls, viewpoints, an underground cave route, a large open-air amphitheater and a zip line over the pit. Rising to 295 m in the southwest of Kielce, about 1 km from the city's main pedestrian street, it is one of the best places to understand the deep geological past of the Holy Cross Mountains — and an easy half-day out with kids.

Where it is and how to get there

Kielce, capital of the Świętokrzyskie region, lies between Warsaw and Kraków on the S7 expressway: roughly 180 km south of Warsaw and about 115 km north of Kraków, around 1.5–2 hours by car or train from either city. Kraków and Warsaw airports are the nearest international gateways. In town, city buses 4, 19, 27 and Z stop at "Krakowska Kadzielnia." Drivers can park along Aleja Legionów, at a lot accessed from Krakowska Street, or by the football stadium.

From quarry to nature reserve

The hill is made of Upper Devonian limestone, laid down in a warm sea hundreds of millions of years ago. Quarrying started in the 18th century — the first lime kiln dates from 1770 — and ended in 1962. The summit outcrop, Geologists' Rock (Skałka Geologów), was protected as early as 1931, and the Kadzielnia nature reserve was created in 1962. The name is said to come either from juniper used to make incense (kadzidło) or from a church sexton who once leased the land.

After mining stopped, groundwater flooded the pit and formed the Emerald Lake. It largely dried up in the 1990s when the water table dropped; today only a small, overgrown pond remains. Kadzielnia is part of the Holy Cross Mountains Geopark, a member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks network.

The caves

About 25 caves have been documented in the hill, the largest concentration in the Kielce area. The longest, the Cave of the Discoverers (Jaskinia Odkrywców), is linked with the Prochownia and Szczelina caves and open as an Underground Tourist Route. Guided visits last about 30 minutes, and the temperature inside is around 10°C (50°F), so bring a sweater even in summer.

What else to see

• Viewpoints and trails around the quarry rim; the city's red heritage trail crosses the hill.
• Kadzielnia Amphitheater, handed over to the city in 1971 and completely rebuilt in 2010, with about 5,500 seats — a major venue for concerts and televised shows.
• The zip line: about 600 m in total, including roughly 540 m of rides through the air (the longest about 333 m). Check current prices with the operator.

• Reserve and park: free, no ticket needed.
• Underground route: open April 1–October 31; Tuesday–Friday 10:00 am–5:00 pm (last entry 4:30 pm), Saturday–Sunday 11:00 am–6:00 pm (last entry 5:30 pm), closed Mondays. Tickets: 30 PLN, reduced 25 PLN, under-3s free; cash, card or BLIK.

• October is the last month of the cave season; the route is closed from November.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, if you are in Kielce or passing between Warsaw and Kraków. Allow 1–2 hours for the park and caves, more with the zip line. Nearby, the Royal Castle in Chęciny and the Tokarnia open-air museum make a good day trip.
