Palaces
Kielce, Holy Cross
The Palace of the Kraków Bishops in Kielce (say "KYEL-tseh") is the finest historic building in this central Polish city and is often described as the best-preserved early Baroque palace from the first half of the 17th century anywhere in Poland. Standing on Cathedral Hill next to the cathedral, it forms a national Historic Monument and houses the National Museum in Kielce. Inside you can see original painted ceilings, rooms lined with bishops' portraits, a gallery of Polish painting and a formal Italian garden.
Kielce lies roughly halfway between Kraków and Warsaw, about 115 km from Kraków and 180 km from Warsaw, with good road links via the S7 expressway. Both cities have major international airports. Trains connect Kielce with Kraków and Warsaw, and from Kielce station the palace is a walk of about 15 minutes through the city center. The address is Plac Zamkowy 1. There is paid street parking in the downtown zone.
For centuries Kielce belonged to the bishops of Kraków, then one of the most powerful offices in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Bishop Jakub Zadzik, who was also Grand Chancellor of the Crown, paid for this new residence out of his own pocket. It was built in 1637–1641 (the museum gives 1637–1644). The architect is uncertain; historians suggest Tomasz Poncino, Giovanni Trevano or Constantino Tencalla. The interiors were painted by the workshop of Tommaso Dolabella, court painter to the Vasa kings.
Two side wings were added in the early 18th century, turning the building into a classic entre cour et jardin layout, set between a front courtyard and a rear garden. The bishops used it until 1789, when the reforming Great Sejm nationalized church estates. After that the palace served as government offices, barracks and schools; in 1816 the statesman Stanisław Staszic founded a mining academy here. In 1914 it was a headquarters of Józef Piłsudski's Legions, the volunteer units that fought for Polish independence in World War I. The museum moved in in 1971.
The palace hosts four permanent exhibitions:
Behind the palace is the Italian Garden, opened in 2005, with geometric flowerbeds and views over the city. Allow one hour for the historic interiors and two to three hours for everything. A free audio guide is available through the MOVITECH app.
As of October 2026 the museum lists these hours from September to April:
From May to August those last four days run 10 am–6 pm. Last entry is one hour before closing. The museum is closed on public holidays, including November 1 and 11, December 24–26 and December 31–January 1.
Permanent exhibitions are free on Tuesdays. Guided tours in English cost 70 PLN per group on top of tickets and must be booked in advance; groups of more than 15 must always book.
Yes. Few places in Poland let you walk through genuine 17th-century aristocratic interiors that survived wars and partitions, and the Kielce palace does so without the crowds of Kraków's Wawel. It is entirely indoors, which makes it a good winter stop on a Kraków–Warsaw journey.
