Oblęgorek, Holy Cross
The Henryk Sienkiewicz Museum in Oblęgorek (say "ob-WEN-go-rek") is the fairy-tale manor house that the Polish nation gave to its most celebrated novelist in 1900. Sienkiewicz, author of Quo Vadis and winner of the 1905 Nobel Prize in Literature, spent his summers here until World War I. Set in an English-style park near Kielce in central Poland, the house keeps much of its original furniture and was the first museum in Poland dedicated to a Nobel laureate. It is now a national Historic Monument.
Oblęgorek is a village about 20 km northwest of Kielce, which lies roughly halfway between Kraków and Warsaw (both with international airports). A car is by far the easiest option; the museum is at Aleja Lipowa 24. If you are already in Kielce, pair this trip with the Palace of the Kraków Bishops, which belongs to the same National Museum.
In 1900, to mark 25 years of Sienkiewicz's writing, Poles raised money through public collections to buy him the Oblęgorek estate. At the time Poland did not exist as a state, being partitioned between Russia, Prussia and Austria, so the gift had a strong patriotic meaning. Architect Hugo Kudera designed an eclectic residence with a slender tower and the figure of a winged hussar, the famous Polish cavalryman, above the front. From 1902 to 1914 the writer spent his summers here. When World War I broke out he left for Switzerland, where he died in Vevey in 1916; his remains were brought to Warsaw in 1924.
His children initiated the museum, which opened in 1958. Since 1976 it has been a branch of the National Museum in Kielce.
