St John the Apostle and Evangelist Church in Pińczów

The Church of St John the Apostle and Evangelist in Pińczów is a former Pauline church where a Late Gothic structure meets Mannerist forms and Baroque furnishings. It stands on Freedom Square beside the former Pauline monastery and the Regional Museum.

From collegiate church to Pauline church

Bishop Zbigniew Oleśnicki founded the church in 1430 and entrusted it to the Paulines in 1436. In the following decades a three-aisle basilica was built, incorporating older elements including a Gothic porch. During the Reformation the church became contested ground: the Paulines were removed in 1550, returned briefly in 1551–1555, and took possession again after Bishop Piotr Myszkowski bought Pińczów’s estates in 1586.

Late Gothic, Mannerist and Baroque layers

The architectural ensemble combines Late Gothic remains with Mannerist decoration and later Baroque alterations. Notice the Gothic porch with the Oleśnicki coat of arms, the Early Baroque western gable and the domed chapel. The interior contains a Late Baroque high altar from 1746, ten side altars, choir stalls from around 1665 and an 18th-century organ front.

Jan Łaski and visiting

Jan Łaski, a pastor and theologian associated with the Polish Reformation, is buried in the church. The monument is at 26 Freedom Square; the former monastery buildings beside it house the Regional Museum. The National Heritage Board advises arranging interior access with the parish in advance, so check before travelling. Allow about an hour for the church and monastery.
