Sport Dolina Ski Slope in Bytom

In the middle of Upper Silesia, a few steps from a beech forest, skiers glide down a slope created on the site of a former dolomite mine. Sport Dolina (formerly Dolomity Sportowa Dolina) has operated since 1 December 2002 in Bytom's Sucha Góra district, at ul. Blachówka 94, on the border with Tarnowskie Góry. It is the nearest snow for people in the conurbation who do not want to drive to the Beskids for a single evening of skiing.

History: from dolomite to skis

The Blachówka open-pit dolomite mine was the first of its kind in Silesia; sources differ on when it opened – 1856 or 1889. First iron ore was dug here, then dolomite for steelworks in Bytom, Gliwice and Świętochłowice; a narrow-gauge railway carried the output, and in the 1920s 42 people worked here. In the 1970s extraction was cut back to protect the nearby Segiet reserve, and in 1993 the mine began to be wound up. A ski resort was built on the reclaimed land, and its lifts opened in 2002. Sucha Góra itself was founded in 1778 as a colony of Piekary Rudne and has been part of Bytom since 1975.

What to do

• Skiing and snowboarding – runs for different levels served by a lift; the slope is floodlit, so you can ski in the evening.
• Sledging – a sledging hill with an all-day ticket; carers of children under 16 get in free.
• Ski school, hire and service – lessons with an instructor, equipment sets by the hour, waxing and binding adjustment on site.

Tripto tip

In the 2025/2026 winter season the slope was open daily 10:00–20:00; the resort publishes current hours, conditions and prices on its website, and a live webcam shows the slope. The cheapest options are the last hour before closing and the weekday morning pass. 2–3 hours is enough for an evening. Right next door is the Segiet reserve – a forest reserve with beech woodland, established in 1953 on former mining land. Most of the Blachówka quarry, with gorges up to 60 m deep, was added to the reserve in 2023 and is not open to visitors – keep off its crumbling slopes.
