Historic Silver Mine Tarnowskie Góry

The Historic Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Góry opens the underground workings of a former lead, silver and zinc mine. The tourist route descends about 40 metres and is 1,740 metres long. Its signature section is a boat crossing of almost 300 metres through a flooded adit. It forms part of Tarnowskie Góry’s mining heritage, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017.

What you see underground

The visit runs through the workings of the former Royal Friedrich Mine, active from the late 18th century until the early 20th century. You see traces of miners’ work, drainage systems and mining technology, while the guide explains why removing underground water was essential to the mine’s operation.

More than the Silver Mine

The same organisation also runs the Black Trout Adit, where the visit takes place almost entirely by boat. It is a separate attraction, with a different meeting point and its own rules, so do not assume that one ticket covers both sites. Above ground, the Steam Engine Open-Air Museum adds machinery and, on selected dates or tickets, a short railway ride.

Practical information

The temperature underground is about 10°C, so bring a warm layer and flat-soled shoes. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled entry; being late may mean a later slot or no visit. Visitors with claustrophobia, cardiac problems or back conditions should assess the route beforehand. Check accessibility before booking, because the underground sites do not all offer the same facilities.
