Museum in Tarnowskie Góry

On the first floor of one of the town’s oldest town houses at 1 Market Square operates the Museum in Tarnowskie Góry — the only municipal museum in the Tarnowskie Góry county, with collections of nearly 10,000 objects: history, art, ethnography. The institution has run since 1958, and its seat — the Sedlaczek House — spans five centuries.

From starosts to a wine cellar

The town house probably dates from the 16th century and served the starosts of the Bytom-Tarnowskie Góry land; the first mention comes from 1670, when it belonged to Christoph Kraker. In 1805 Johann Sedlaczek bought it, moving here a wine cellar running since 1786 — it operates on the ground floor to this day and gave the building its name. The first floor belongs to the museum.

The ceiling that graced a hall

During renovation in 1956 a Renaissance wooden ceiling with polychromes from the first half of the 17th century was discovered — today it adorns the largest exhibition hall. Outstanding is a collection of Western European painting assembled by Father Michał Lewek and the exhibition “From the History of Tarnowskie Góry” with mining keepsakes, a century-old model steam engine and a portrait of Guido Henckel von Donnersmarck by Franz von Lenbach.

Sobieski under this roof

The town house hosted Augustus II the Strong, Augustus III, Goethe (1790) and Julian Ursyn Niemcewicz. The most famous stay was that of 20–22 August 1683, when Jan III Sobieski, on his way to Vienna, here parted with Marysieńka and his youngest son — an episode commemorated by an exhibition with a collection of Sobieskiana.
