Culture Station and Model Railway in Tarnowskie Góry

Since December 2025 the upper floor of the Neo-Renaissance railway station in Tarnowskie Góry – the former waiting room – has housed the Culture Station (Dworzec Kultury), a branch of the Tarnowskie Góry Museum. Its main attraction is the Tarnowskie Góry Model Railway, where trains set off every half hour, alongside a contemporary art gallery. Admission is free, so it makes a good stop even between trains.

History: a station from 1888

Tarnowskie Góry has had a railway since 1854. By the end of the 19th century some 100 trains a day departed from here, and the old building was no longer enough. The new two-storey brick station on a stone plinth, designed by Robert Honsch, opened on 15 October 1888. The façade bore the coats of arms of Wrocław, Tarnowskie Góry and the Kingdom of Prussia – the last was later replaced by the Polish eagle. In 1960 the interiors were remodelled in Socialist Realist style. The building is on the municipal register of historic monuments.

What to see

• The Tarnowskie Góry Model Railway – among the tracks and moving trains stand models of historic buildings and traces of the town's mining past, linked to the extraction of silver and lead. The layout combines several scales: N (1:160) shows the sheer size of the Tarnowskie Góry railway junction, H0 and H0e (1:87) the narrow-gauge line, and gauge 1 (1:32) models of the largest trains and buildings, among others. The shows come with the sounds of arriving and departing trains.
• The gallery in the former waiting room, with temporary exhibitions and a permanent feature – one of the Tarnowskie Góry mosaics. In October 2026 it is showing the print exhibition "TG500/Ag. Tarnowskie Góry motifs in artistic graphics".

Tripto tips

The Culture Station is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–17:00; last entry is half an hour before closing. The model railway runs on the hour and at half past, so time your arrival accordingly. In 2026 it is also closed on certain days, including 12–16 October, 1 and 11 November and 24–25 December – check the museum's notice before you go. Groups get in free but must book in advance (tel. +48 516 360 644).

Access is by stairs from the station waiting room, which you can enter from the town side or from the platforms; access for people with reduced mobility is very limited. Next to the station there is an interchange with a car park and the bus station. Allow 30–45 minutes; afterwards walk about 800 m to the museum's main building in the Sedlaczek House at Rynek 1.
