Księża Góra Park in Radzionków

On a hill of the Tarnowskie Góry Ridge, 357 m above sea level, lies a park that Radzionków owes to the interwar years and to a man who later became governor of the Katowice province – Jerzy Ziętek. Its name, Księża Góra, means "Priests' Hill". Today it is a place for evening strolls, rollerblading, summer swimming and winter cross-country skiing, with a botanical garden and a grotto that is home to a friendly reptile.

History: the mayor's park

In 1929 Jerzy Ziętek, later governor of the Katowice province, became head of the Radzionków municipality. Under his leadership the People's Park named after Marshal Józef Piłsudski was laid out on Księża Góra, and the town also gained a health centre, playgrounds, a cinema and a stadium. The park grounds, about 30 ha, were obtained by the municipality as compensation from Count Henckel von Donnersmarck. Today the park is run by the municipal sports and recreation centre (MOSiR), which has its base here.

What to see and do

• 2.5 km of lit paths – for walking, cycling, rollerblading, running and Nordic walking; in winter the park welcomes cross-country skiers.
• The Silesian Botanical Garden (ul. Księżogórska 90A) – set up partly to protect warm-loving grasslands. Remains of an old quarry can be seen inside.
• Radzio's grotto – a mysterious cave houses Radzio, a nothosaur who – the park's managers assure you – is friendly to every visitor. A natural stop for families with children.
• Recreation zone – a playground with a rope course, an outdoor gym and chess tables.
• Pétanque ground – a full-size court opened in 2008, the third professional facility of its kind in the Upper Silesian conurbation.

Open-air pool

In summer the main draw is the MOSiR outdoor pool complex with a 50 × 19.83 m sports pool (up to 2.66 m deep), a pool for non-swimmers and a paddling pool with three slides. In season it opens 10:00–19:00; in 2026 it closed on 31 August. The ticket also covers the beach-volleyball, mini-basketball and pétanque courts.

Tripto tip

• The park is open 24 hours and entry is free; only the pool charges admission.
• Time: 1–1.5 hours for a walk with children and a visit to the grotto, longer with the botanical garden.
• Getting there: MOSiR is at ul. Księżogórska 90. The Silesian Insurgents' Trail and the Millennium Trail also pass through the town, so a visit is easy to combine with a hike.
