Kocie Górki in Piekary Śląskie

Kocie Górki is a hilly walking area on the border of Piekary Śląskie and Radzionków, shaped in part by former mining. Pits, spoil heaps and hollows have been reclaimed by vegetation, creating a mosaic of habitats from damp depressions to warm, dry limestone grasslands. It is a good option for a short nature break in an urban setting.

A post-mining landscape

Kocie Górki’s main value lies in the contrast between industrial history and recovering nature. Uneven paths cross hillocks, slopes and open ground. This is not a park with extensive infrastructure, so choose a safe route yourself and take care near the edges of former workings.

Plants and wildlife

The area includes xerothermic grasslands, scrub and damp corners. Typical sightings include robin, chiffchaff, blackcap and sparrowhawk, as well as amphibians such as the European tree frog. Notable plants include cross gentian and columbine. Do not pick plants or walk onto sensitive habitats.

Practical information

Kocie Górki are used mainly by walkers and cyclists. Wear closed shoes and expect mud and slippery slopes after rain. Combine the area with the basilica in Piekary Śląskie, Radzionków or the Historic Silver Mine in Tarnowskie Góry. Check local access and nature-protection notices before travelling.
