Kayaking the Liswarta River

Kayaking the Liswarta River (lees-VAR-tah) is one of the most popular paddling trips in Poland's Silesian region. This small, winding river in Kłobuck County, about 30 km northwest of Częstochowa, slips through forest and meadow, and its lower course has a marked canoe trail with riffles, a few portages and quiet stretches. It is a good choice for a day or a weekend on the water, with the option of continuing onto the larger Warta River.

Where it is and how to get there

The kayak trail lies in rural northern Silesia, between Krzepice and the Warta. Częstochowa, famous for the Jasna Góra monastery, is the nearest city, with direct trains from Warsaw and Katowice; from Katowice it is about 100 km to the river. Public transport to the riverside villages is limited, so most visitors drive or arrange a pickup with their rental company.

The river and the trail

The Liswarta is 93 km long. It rises at Mzyki on the Silesian Upland and joins the Warta near the village of Kule. Only the lower course, roughly 42 km, is really navigable, and in 2020 a canoe trail was signposted there: about 41 km from the bridge in Starokrzepice to the mouth, or about 57 km if you continue down the Warta to Działoszyn. Hazards, portages and sights are marked along the way. The trail is seasonal.

Which section to paddle

The Silesian Tourist Organization splits the route into four stages:

• Starokrzepice – Danków (16.4 km): the hardest stage, with many riffles and frequent portages; for experienced paddlers.
• Danków – Zawady (12.4 km): the most popular stage, with two portages and several riffles.
• Zawady – Wąsosz Górny (17.4 km): no portages but several riffles; after Kule you are on the Warta.
• Wąsosz Górny – Działoszyn (12.4 km): an easy Warta stretch with one portage at a weir, which you avoid by finishing in Działoszyn.

Combining stages two and three gives about 30 km, a classic two-day trip with a night in Zawady.

Safety and practical tips

The Liswarta is not a completely easy river: riffles, fallen trees and low water can surprise beginners, although some sections suit families with children. Always wear a life jacket, carry drinking water and a dry bag, and ask your rental company about current water levels, especially after a dry spell or heavy rain. Rental websites are in Polish, so booking by phone or email with a translation app is the easiest route.

Kayak rentals and prices

There are more than a dozen rental companies, mostly in Zawady, Danków, Popów and Kule; they usually supply kayaks, life jackets and minibus transfers to the start or from the finish. History and sights along the way

Between the two World Wars, the stretch of river between Łebki and Podłęże Królewskie formed the border between Poland and Germany. In Danków you can visit the ruins of a 17th-century castle and a Marian shrine; Wąsosz Górny has a Calvary and a battlefield from the 1863 January Uprising against Russian rule. The blue-marked Liswarta Cycle Trail (108 km) follows the valley from source to mouth.

Is it worth it?

Yes, if you want an authentic, low-key river trip away from the crowds of better-known Polish kayak routes. Go between late spring and early fall.
