Sandomierz Wine Trail

Vineyards have returned to the Vistula after centuries, and the Sandomierz land has special rights to it: the first vines were planted here as early as the 13th century. The Sandomierz Wine Trail is a 60-kilometre route through Dwikozy, Samborzec, Sandomierz and Wilczyce, leading to wine-growing farms, vine plantations and processing plants — five entities in total on the trail.

A culinary product with a scholarly backbone

The trail is a tourist product promoting the wine-growing craft of the region, and its development rests on a serious foundation: the project Return to the Wine Traditions of the Sandomierz Land is run by the Sandomierz Scientific Society. Combining cultivation practice with documenting the history of the vine sets Sandomierz apart on the map of Polish winemaking — here tradition is not just a word on a label.

What you will see on the route

The trail includes plantations on sunlit slopes, wines for tasting and plants where the fruit is bottled. A characteristic landscape of the region are vineyards laid out on steep slopes by the road — on the Sandomierz hill the vine rows neighbour the Gothic church of St James, creating one of the most recognisable silhouettes of the town.

In practice

The route stretches for dozens of kilometres, so plan a whole day for a leisurely drive with tastings, and ideally a car with a designated driver or a night in Sandomierz. It is worth arranging tastings and vineyard visits with the hosts in advance, as hours can be seasonal. Getting from the Sandomierz market square to the first points on the hills takes a quarter of an hour.
