Ostromecko Palaces

The Ostromecko Palaces (say "os-tro-METS-ko") are a pair of historic residences on a bluff above the Vistula River, about 14–15 km east of Bydgoszcz in north-central Poland. The Baroque-Rococo Old Palace holds a celebrated collection of historic pianos, while the Neoclassical New Palace, designed in the Berlin studio of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, hosts concerts, art galleries and an attic full of owls. Add a landscaped park attributed to Peter Joseph Lenné and you have one of the most rewarding day trips from Bydgoszcz.

Where it is

Bydgoszcz (say "BID-gosh") is about 3 hours by train from Warsaw and 2 from Gdańsk, and Toruń's UNESCO-listed Old Town is roughly 45 km away. Ostromecko lies on regional road 551 on the far bank of the Vistula; from Bydgoszcz you drive through Fordon and across the river. There are two free parking lots, one on Bydgoska Street and one opposite the gate. A seasonal suburban bus (line 40) and regional buses also run here.

A short history

The estate belonged to the Mostowski family from the late 17th century. The Old Palace was built in 1759–1766 for Paweł Michał Mostowski, governor of Pomerania (the operator dates the first residence on the site to about 1730). In 1804 the estate passed to the Schönborn family and, through marriage in 1873, to the Alvenslebens, who owned it until 1945. The New Palace was built in 1832–1848 for Jakob Martin Schönborn to a design from Schinkel's office, Prussia's leading architect; a Neo-Baroque hunting lodge was added in 1891 and a ballroom pavilion in 1905–1912.

After 1945 the palaces were looted and then used as a school for deaf children. The city of Bydgoszcz bought the New Palace and park in 1996, later took over the Old Palace and restored the whole complex in 2007–2011. It's now run by the city's cultural center.

What to see

• The Andrzej Szwalbe Historic Piano Collection in the Old Palace: grand, square and upright pianos from the 19th and early 20th centuries, including an instrument owned by composer Zygmunt Noskowski.
• The New Palace interiors and ballroom, plus a room dedicated to Schinkel.
• "Awakening", 100-plus works of Polish art around 1900 (Malczewski, Wyczółkowski, Weiss, Wyspiański) from Professor Dariusz Markowski's collection.
• The "Owl Attic", about 8,000 owl figurines collected over 50 years by Erika and Norbert Boese.
• The park (36 ha): some 4,500 trees, an Italian rose garden, a four-row lime avenue and a Neo-Romanesque family mausoleum from 1887.

Opening hours and tickets

As of October 2026 (official website), winter hours (Oct 1–Apr 28) are Tue–Fri 11 am–4 pm and Sat–Sun 11 am–5 pm; in summer each day runs an hour longer. Closed Mondays. A ticket for both palaces costs PLN 25 (reduced PLN 15 for children under 12 and seniors 60+; family PLN 50). Admission to the palaces is free on Tuesdays. The park is open daily 8 am–10 pm, free, and dogs on a leash are welcome. Building work is planned from October 19, 2026 to about March 1, 2027; the official notice only says the guest rooms will close, so call reception (+48 785 250 182) to check before you go.

Is it worth visiting?

Yes, especially for music and garden lovers. Allow 2–3 hours; the New Palace has a restaurant. Combine it with Old Fordon on the way back.
