Kamieniec Ząbkowicki Palace

The Palace of Marianne of Orange in Kamieniec Ząbkowicki (say "kah-MYEN-yets zomb-ko-VEETS-kee") is a vast neo-Gothic castle-style palace in Lower Silesia, southwestern Poland, designed by the great Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Built over more than three decades for a Dutch princess, burned in 1946 and now steadily being brought back to life, it is one of the most dramatic sights within day-trip range of Wrocław. Since 2024 it has been a national Historic Monument.

Where it is and how to get there

Kamieniec Ząbkowicki lies on national road 8 between Wrocław and Kłodzko, about an hour's drive south of Wrocław, whose airport has flights from across Europe. Regional Koleje Dolnośląskie trains from Wrocław take roughly 45 minutes, and the palace is within walking distance of the station. Drivers can park at the palace on ul. Zamkowa (parking is paid).

A princess, a divorce and a fire

The palace was commissioned by Princess Marianne of the Netherlands (Marianne of Orange), wife of Prince Albrecht of Prussia, brother of the Prussian king. Schinkel drew up the design, but because of his illness the young architect Ferdinand Martius supervised the work. The foundation stone was laid on October 15, 1838. When Marianne's scandalous divorce went through in 1848, construction stopped, resuming only in 1853. Peter Joseph Lenné, Prussia's leading landscape designer, planned the terraced gardens in 1858.

The project was considered complete on May 8, 1872, when a statue of Nike was unveiled on an 11 m column. The final bill was 971,692 thalers, more than eleven times what Marianne's mother had paid for the whole Kamieniec estate in 1812.

After World War II the palace passed to Poland along with the rest of Silesia. In February 1946 Soviet soldiers set it on fire; roofs, towers and ceilings were destroyed and the furnishings disappeared. Some of its marble was later used in the Congress Hall of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. A private leaseholder began saving the ruin in the 1980s, and in 2012 it returned to the local municipality, which has been restoring it step by step.

The palace by the numbers

The sheer scale explains why restoration is taking decades. The palace encloses about 90,000 cubic meters and nearly 20,000 square meters of floor space, arranged around two inner courtyards of roughly 19.5 by 18.2 m. The surrounding park and woodland on Zameczno hill cover around 115 hectares. Late in World War II the building served as an art depository; Soviet troops controlled it from May 1945 to February 1946, and a Polish commission took over what was left of the collections only after the fire.

What to see

The building measures about 75 by 48 m, and its corner towers rise 33.6 m. Highlights include:

• the ballroom, whose star vaults were rebuilt in 2013,
• the inner courtyards with arcades and a fountain,
• the viewing terrace, restored in 2014, with sweeping views over the countryside,
• the terraced gardens with fountains and the Perseus grotto, where a 3.5 m reconstruction of the statue in Carrara marble was installed in 2023,
• the Hohenzollern mausoleum (1870) in the park, reopened in 2018,
• the Nike column, whose statue returned in 2023.

Restoration is ongoing, so some rooms still show bare brick and fire damage. Many visitors find that raw, half-ruined atmosphere part of the appeal. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the palace and terraces, longer with the mausoleum and park.

Tickets and opening hours

As of October 2026 the palace website lists:

• Palace: daily 10 am–6 pm, guided tours only, last entry 5 pm,
• Terraced gardens: daily 9 am–6 pm,
• Mausoleum: Wednesday–Sunday 10 am–4 pm,
• ticket office daily 9 am–5 pm; palace café 9 am–6 pm.

Prices: gardens only 25 PLN; gardens and palace tour 55 PLN (reduced 50 PLN); mausoleum 15 PLN; gardens, palace and mausoleum 65 PLN (reduced 60 PLN). Children under 5 are free. Closed on January 1, Easter Sunday, November 1 and December 24–25. Tours are in Polish as standard; ask the tourist information point (+48 74 637 01 67) about other languages in advance.

Is it worth visiting?

Absolutely, especially if you love architecture or Prussian history. It is open year-round, so it works as a winter day trip from Wrocław, and the café is a good place to warm up. Note that the route involves stairs and uneven floors; the palace does not publish accessibility details.
