Church of the Assumption (former Cistercian abbey church), Kamieniec Ząbkowicki

The former Cistercian church in Kamieniec Ząbkowicki is 70 m long and 24 m high, and its aisles all rise to the same height – a Gothic hall church, a rarity among Cistercian buildings. Inside stands one of the tallest wooden altarpieces in Poland, over 22 metres high, with paintings by the Baroque master Michael Willmann. Together with the abbey and Princess Marianne of Orange's palace, the church has been a Historic Monument of Poland since 2024.

History: from Augustinians to Cistercians

According to the Kamieniec Ząbkowicki municipality, from 1210 the former stronghold was home to Augustinian canons brought from the Abbey of St Mary on the Sand in Wrocław. In 1247 the Bishop of Wrocław, Thomas I, removed them and installed Cistercians from Lubiąż, who stayed until the King of Prussia dissolved the monastery in October 1810.

The Cistercians built on their predecessors' walls, which is why the monastery stands unusually on the north rather than the south side of the church. The decision to build a hall church instead of a basilica was made at the end of the 13th century, and the last bays of the nave were probably finished by the mid-14th century. The abbey's heyday was cut short by the Hussite Wars, floods in 1496 and 1501, fires and the Thirty Years' War. In the second half of the 17th century the church was renovated and a Baroque rebuilding of the abbey began. After secularisation the estate was bought by Princess Marianne of Orange-Nassau, who built her palace on the hill above the former monastery.

What to look for

• The high altar of 1704 from the workshop of the Wrocław woodcarver Johann Christoph König – multi-tiered, of pine, over 22 m tall, with Willmann's paintings of the Assumption and an oval Holy Trinity.
• The pulpit of 1708 – topped by the sleeping Jacob, with a ladder resting on clouds above the canopy and angels climbing up and down it.
• The chancel vaults – the ribs spring straight from the columns like palm leaves.
• The Baroque west gable and a stone figure of God the Father from 1735 in front of the facade.

Good to know

According to tradition, in 1741, during the First Silesian War, Frederick the Great fled to the monastery from the Austrians, and the abbot saved the king by disguising him as a monk. During the Second World War the church was one of the largest art depots in Silesia, holding works brought from the Silesian Museum of Fine Arts in Wrocław and elsewhere.

The church is now a parish church, so the interior is easiest to see outside Mass times. An hour is enough for the church and Kościelny Square, but allow half a day to add Marianne of Orange's palace on the hill. The former abbot's palace houses a branch of the State Archives in Wrocław. As you enter Kościelny Square, look out for the stone bridge over the old mill race and the statues of St John of Nepomuk and St Florian from 1732. Kamieniec is on the Cistercian Route and is a railway junction on the line from Wrocław towards Prague, so it is easy to reach by train.
