Former Cistercian Abbey in Kamieniec Ząbkowicki

The former Cistercian abbey in Kamieniec Ząbkowicki stands on a hill above the Nysa Kłodzka, beside the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The monastery’s origins reach back to the 13th century, and its history is tied to the settlement, the nearby Marian shrine in Bardo and a wider cultural landscape. It is a rewarding stop for visitors exploring a less obvious Lower Silesian monument, especially alongside Marianna of Orange’s palace.

Abbey and church

The complex once included the church, abbey buildings, a grange and the abbot’s garden. The Cistercian presence shaped Kamieniec and pastoral care in nearby places of worship, including Bardo. The Church of the Assumption remains in use, while former monastery buildings now have other functions. Read the site as part of the wider Nysa valley rather than as an isolated building.

Art depot and abbot’s garden

During the Second World War the hill stored works evacuated from endangered churches and museums. The abbey’s story also includes a chasuble donated by the King of Prussia in thanks for the monks’ help. The former Baroque Abbot’s Garden is governed by separate municipal visiting rules; it may close in bad weather or during works.

Access to the church, garden and former monastery areas can differ, so check the municipality’s and parish’s current rules before travelling. Allow at least half a day for the abbey complex and Marianna of Orange’s palace. Stay on marked paths in the garden and remember that the grounds may close temporarily for safety.
