Cistercian Abbey in Kamieniec Ząbkowicki

The former Cistercian abbey in Kamieniec Ząbkowicki is one of the most important monastic complexes in Lower Silesia: a mighty Gothic church with a Baroque interior and the former abbots' palace, with Marianne of Orange's Neo-Gothic palace rising above them. The church, from the first half of the 14th century, is regarded as the first hall church in the Polish lands. Since 2024 the abbey, together with the palace and park, has been a Monument of History.

History: from Augustinians to secularisation

In 1210 the Pogorzela family founded an Augustinian provostry here. In 1247–1249 Bishop Thomas I of Wrocław handed the monastery over to Cistercians from Lubiąż, which Pope Innocent IV confirmed in 1251. The abbey became the centre of extensive estates but went through a great deal: the Hussites set it on fire in 1425–1428, in 1501 the Nysa Kłodzka destroyed walls and buildings, and in 1524 a great fire broke out.

Its heyday came at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries under abbots Augustin Neudeck and Gerhard Woywoda, when the church and monastery were remodelled in Baroque style with the involvement of Michael Willmann and Christoph Königer. In 1741 none other than Frederick the Great took refuge here while fleeing the Austrians. In 1810 King Frederick William III of Prussia dissolved the abbey, which then had 38 monks and 31 villages. After a fire in 1817 the church was rebuilt in a slightly altered form, and only one wing of the monastery – the prelature – survived. During the Second World War the church and monastery served as a depot for works of art and archives brought from all over Silesia.

What to see

• The church – today the parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St James the Greater (previously known as the Church of the Assumption), still serving the local parish.
• The former abbots' palace of 1680, which houses a branch of the State Archives in Wrocław. In the main hall of the abbot's apartments, a ceiling fresco shows the abbey's coat of arms and views of the monasteries in Kamieniec and Lubiąż and the church in Bardo; the corner room has stucco work.
• The farm buildings around Kościelny Square: outbuildings, a granary from the first half of the 18th century and remains of the convent garden from 1738.

The church is open for services; ask the parish at ul. Kolejowa 20 about visiting (tel. +48 74 817 31 30). The archive is a research institution, so the interiors of the abbots' palace are not a regular tourist route – contact the branch about access (tel. +48 74 817 35 40). Kamieniec is about 75 km from Wrocław. Allow an hour for the abbey and at least half a day if you add Marianne of Orange's palace on the hill.
